Breaking News!

Historic Preservation and The Portland Plan
Long-awaited meeting dates are coming right up!

The Bureau of Planning & Sustainability has now scheduled the Historic Preservation-specific sessions we have all been waiting for. After many months of discussion and many Portland Plan meetings on an array of other subjects, please mark your calendars and plan to attend two VERY important
symposia on Historic Resources.

#1 FRIDAY, May 20th, 9:00AM - 12:00 Noon
1900 SW 4th Avenue (City of Portland Development Services building))

#2 FRIDAY, June 17th, 9:00AM - 11:30AM
1900 SW 4th Avenue (same location)

The intent of these sessions is to identify historic preservation policy issues, from the views of important stakeholders including the Landmarks Commission, property owners and developers, preservation advocates, including our own Executive Director Cathy Galbraith, and others. This will take place at Session #1.

Session #2 will present the findings from the first session, with the objective of arriving at Historic Preservation Policy documents for inclusion in the Portland Plan. This is our opportunity to define the Portland's future for historic preservation.

A great turnout is absolutely essential...the Friday morning session times are not exactly easy for the working world, but all of these subject-specific symposia are happening on Friday mornings. Check back to our website for more detailed announcements.

National Register Historic Districts Symposium
Saturday, April 30, 2011    10:00 am - 1:00 pm

A National Register Historic District listing is the strongest preservation tool we have in the Portland area to preserve our historic buildings. The process is detailed and lengthy, and can be expensive, but benefits of a listing are far reaching for everyone, from the individual property owner to the city as a whole. Please join us as a panel of local and state experts clarify the often confusing details about National Register Historic Districts.

The Historic Colonel Henry and Mary Dosch House

Home and Garden Tour
Sunday, May 22, 2011
2:00 to 5:00 pm

A members-only event benefiting AHC education programs

$40 per person

The AHC is pleased to offer a one-time visit in honor of National Historic Preservation Month to the historic Colonel Henry and Mary Dosch home and gardens, thanks to the generous hospitality of Dosch family descendants Jim and Gail Driscoll. The grand Hillsdale-area country home, designed by Joseph Jacobberger in 1892, is surrounded by spacious grounds which include many heritage trees. In addition to viewing the home and grounds and enjoying refreshments, you will learn about the home's significant interior from Bo Sullivan, Rejuvenation historian and principal of Arcalus Period Design and about Dosch family history from Jeffer Daykin, who curated an exhibit on the family for the Multnomah County Library. Pre-registration by members is required. The address will be provided to you when you register. Not a member yet? Join now to attend this special event.
Sustaining Contributions

Did you know that you can support the AHC on an ongoing basis by signing up to have a monthly contribution from your checking account or your credit card? No muss, no fuss, and hardly any paperwork. A very "green" solution which means that all of your contribution can go towards saving the buildings you love. Your sustaining donation can begin at any time that works for you, be in any amount of $5.00 per month or larger, and will help provide a predictable base of month-to-month operating funds that are so greatly needed. Call or email Holly Chamberlain for more information at 503-231-7264 or hollyc@VisitAHC.org.

Thanks very much!

Does your employer match gifts?

Many companies double or even triple gifts to non-profits...including membership dollars! The AHC's parent company, the Bosco-Milligan Foundation, is already registered with a number of companies as a recognized non-profit, and we are happy to do so with more. Check with your employer's human resources or community involvement office to find out if you have access to a matching program. For not much paperwork, you can make your gift to the AHC go even farther! Thanks!
