The Future of the Past: Heritage Conservation in England and Portland in the 21st Century
SPECIAL TIME!
Thursday, April 7, 2011   7:00-8:30 pm
Members: $7.50

General Public: $15

How do they implement historic preservation (more often known as "heritage conservation") in other parts of the world? Legal protection against demolition and unsuitable renovation work is but one important stage. Please join us as Alina Congreve reviews the system of legal protection in England and the roles of local government and volunteer organizations. Congreve will discuss the positive role that heritage has to play in urban renewal projects-where heritage can be an asset rather than a burden to development. She will conclude by looking at a range of successful projects to engage a wider audience in heritage protection.

Edgar M. Lazarus designed over 150 projects throughout his 40+ year career. Yet today only a small body of work has been attributed to him, including buildings long since demolished. His legacy includes Portland landmarks: the U.S. Custom House, the Electric Building, the Taft Hotel, and several impressive houses. Beyond Portland, his notable designs include courthouses for Morrow and Clatsop counties, early buildings on the Oregon State University campus, and the Dome Building at Salem's Oregon State Hospital. The iconic Vista House at Crown Point is his masterwork.

Jean Thomas

Painter, Jean Thomas

Opening Reception,

Friday April 1st 6-8pm

Free and Open to the public

All work is for sale with sales benefiting the artist and the AHC

Jean's style is impressionistic with strong design, vigorous brush work and luminous color. Tactile surface texture and a 'painterly' style create arresting images of both the familiar and the imagined. Through the years Jean's paintings have evolved into bold, dramatic interpretations her environment. The current work celebrates the buildings and bridges in and around Portland, Oregon, as well as the coastlines and mountains she regularly visits. Jean has shown her work in galleries in several western states. Besides successful one-woman shows, she had had her art commercially published and has won numerous prestigious awards in juried shows. She is represented in private and corporate collections in the United States, Canada, and England.

 QUOTES & FACTS

Previously:  Historic Preservation = Jobs

            Historic Preservation = Tourism

This week:  Historic Preservation means private investment.

Municipalities often act as a stimulus to greater community reinvestment and as gateways to accessing multiple incentive programs for the public.  According to the Rutgers study, for every $1 of incentive provided by the federal tax credit, $5 of private investment is leveraged.  Three-quarters of this investment remains in the local community where the labor and materials tend to be hired and purchased.

Does your employer match gifts?

Many companies double or even triple gifts to non-profits...including membership dollars! The AHC's parent company, the Bosco-Milligan Foundation, is already registered with a number of companies as a recognized non-profit, and we are happy to do so with more. Check with your employer's human resources or community involvement office to find out if you have access to a matching program. For not much paperwork, you can make your gift to the AHC go even farther! Thanks!
