This Week!!

It's "Cooch" not "Cowch"
An Insider's Guide to Portland Architecture and History
Saturday, February 19, 2011 10:00 am-11:30 am
Members: $13 General Public: $18

Few people learn about Portland's history or its architecture in a formal way. For the majority of new residents, learning is by happenstance. A building that went unnoticed on the morning commute suddenly emerges from the mist with a nickname and its place in the city's history is revealed. And learning is often by mistake. Have you ever been corrected for mispronouncing the name of a new or unfamiliar street or building?

Nothing defines the interior of an older home like its lighting. Just as exterior building styles have changed throughout the decades, so have the designs and materials of light fixtures. Appropriate lighting is an important component of any home restoration project and we're bringing in a top-notch expert to "enlighten" us about popular lighting styles.

Doug RichardsonPhotographer Doug Richardson
on exhibit through March 1st.

Work is for sale at very reasonable prices with sales benefiting the artist and the AHC

Doug RichardsonI have been photographing the world around me for over thirty-five years. The last few years I have been exploring Portland's iconic places at night using film and long shutter speeds to capture familiar scenes in a different light.  For me this creates an emotional experience that differs dramatically from daylight shots.

Restoring History LLCRestoring History LLC is a consulting service focused on preserving and restoring historic buildings. They help find creative solutions to the puzzle of how to incorporate modern amenities without destroying the historic character that make vintage buildings special in the first place. They also help design and return historic details that may have been lost through previous insensitive remodels. Much of their focus is on kitchens and bathrooms, but they can help with anything from finding hardware, color consults, to finding crafts people who understand historic buildings.

We asked owner Karla Pearlstein about her involvement with the AHC and she shared the following with us:

"Restoring History LLC is proud to be a member of the Architectural Heritage Center. We believe that the AHC provides educational opportunities that would otherwise not exist. Restoring History LLC. believes that the only way to save our heritage is through education, and the AHC provides exhibits, tours, and lectures to promote a better understanding of our architectural material culture. Restoring History LLC. supports the AHC's educational mission.

 Events We Recommend:

The Architectural Heritage Center is proud to announce that we are hosting a screening of the new documentary "The Greenest Building"

Tuesday, February 22, 2012 at 7:00pm

A new hour-long documentary by producer Jane Turville, presents a compelling overview of the important role building reuse plays in creating sustainable communities.  Narrated by David Ogden Stiers, "The Greenest Building" explores the myth that a "green building" is a new building and demonstrates how renovation and adaptive reuse of existing structures fully achieves the sustainability movement's "triple bottom line" - economic, social, and ecological balance.

You can read more about the film and order tickets at http://thegreenestbuildingatahc.eventbrite.com/.

Filmmaker Jane Turville will be on hand to answer questions and DVDs of the film will be available for purchase (cash or check).

Seating is limited - TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED at the above link.

Doors will open at the AHC at 6:00pm so you'll also have time to take a look at our current exhibit Re-Building South Portland.

HPLO Rummer Oak Hills House Tour

Saturday, May 21, 10am - 4pm

Take advantage of a unique opportunity to visit eight homes built by Robert Rummer. These iconic "atomic age" houses are highly sought after and those on tour include some in virtually original condition and others that have been updated. An illustrated lecture by Jack Bookwalter will present an overview of mid-century residential architecture as context for the work of Rummer and Eichler. Mr. Rummer himself will be in attendance to answer questions.

More information and tickets here.

Exhibit:  Bridging the Gap: the History of the Interstate Bridge

Clark County Historical Society and Museum
1511 Main Street
Vancouver, Washington

Runs through Oct 29

This exhibit is about the history of the bridge, how it was built, how it was funded and also looks at the social, cultural, and economics of it.

 Memories of our Founders

"I knew both of them as we used to vie for the spoils on the demolition sites. They always got there first! I met Jerry first, when I had a house with exceptional Povey stained glass windows. Jerry had to repair some broken glass - and he had fill-ins - just what the doctor ordered."

-- Bill Failing

Do you have a recollection of Jerry or Ben that you would like to share for publication or for our archives? Please contact Holly Chamberlain at hollyc@VisitAHC.org or 503-231-7264. Many thanks to those who have already sent in the reminiscences that help round out our organizational history.

 QUOTES & FACTS

A house is so much more than timber, cement, and mortar. It is a love-structure which stores up memories. It is security, shelter, healing, and peace. It is the shared joys, tears, dreams, and heartbreaks of several generations.

-Rev. W.R. Bouknight, III
Bulletin of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church [1990]

Does your employer match gifts?

Many companies double or even triple gifts to non-profits...including membership dollars! The AHC's parent company, the Bosco-Milligan Foundation, is already registered with a number of companies as a recognized non-profit, and we are happy to do so with more. Check with your employer's human resources or community involvement office to find out if you have access to a matching program. For not much paperwork, you can make your gift to the AHC go even farther! Thanks!
