Tell us what you think

Thank you to everyone who has written in to let us know how much you enjoy the weekly enews.  We like hearing from you! Many of you use this newsletter as a reminder for program registrations, to check out volunteer opportunities, and to find resources for your home projects.  Thank you.

Do you have feedback or suggestions you would like to share? If so, please send them to marketing@visitahc.org.  We will do our best to listen to all ideas.

Revised E-news Schedule

Like many other businesses and non profit organizations, the AHC has experienced financial challenges over the past two years.  In a recent planning meeting, we made the decision to cut back on the frequency of our enews letter to make time for some other activities that have not been getting enough of our attention.

For the time being, we will be mailing this newsletter bi-weekly with occasional special mailings when they are needed.  We know that many of you rely on this weekly mailer to help you plan for education programs and other activities, including staying abreast of news on our preservation blog.  We appreciate your support and hope that our schedule change will still allow you to get the timely information you need and expect from us.

For those of you who are further away or involved in our activities less frequently, you will appreciate the decrease in our emailings.

You can always connect to our website for program and other information - www.VisitAHC.org.

You are all important to us and your feedback is always welcome!  Thank you for your continued support.

Marking Our Territory: How to Read Local Landscapes

Part of Oregon Humanities statewide Conversation Project: A New Chautauqua

Saturday, February 5th

10:00 am - 11:30 am

All tickets $5.00

The big house and the quarters; the front door and the back door; lunch counters, water fountains, the back of the bus... One of the most persistent ways people exert power over others is to control their access to space.

Drawing upon the fields of architecture, environmental studies, urban design, and public policy, this discussion will pose the following questions: How do we mark our territory? How do the built environments we create reflect our values and aspirations? Whom do we include and whom do we exclude in the process? Touching on gentrification, the decline of public space, historic preservation, residential segregation, and suburban sprawl, Reiko Hillyer will lead a conversation about how to read the history of our communities through the landscapes we build and consider how we can be more aware of and more engaged in the creation of our surroundings.

The Portland Plan: Historic Preservation's Future
Saturday, February 12, 2011 10:00 am - Noon
All Tickets: $10

The past 18 months of the Portland Plan "update" have been loaded with meetings, forums, websites to monitor, and a crush of additional issues that have been added to the mix. Historic preservation has gotten rather buried and the topic has been quieter than it deserves-given that more than 60,000 of Portland's buildings were constructed before 1930. This session will be a full update on the various components of the Portland Plan-what's in play and what lies ahead. How can we influence and impact what the Plan update does for historic preservation?

For more information and to purchase tickets, click here

Pre-registration is strongly suggested.

This program is assisted by a Partners in the Field challenge grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Sponsored by:   Spirit Mountain Community Fund , Oregon Cultural Trust, and Multnomah County Cultural Coalition

Doug Richardson

I have been photographing the world around me for over thirty-five years. The last few years I have been exploring Portland's iconic places at night using film and long shutter speeds to capture familiar scenes in a different light.  For me this creates an emotional experience that differs dramatically from daylight shots.

Business Member Spotlight

Restoring History LLCRestoring History LLC is a consulting service focused on preserving and restoring historic buildings. They help find creative solutions to the puzzle of how to incorporate modern amenities without destroying the historic character that make vintage buildings special in the first place. They also help design and return historic details that may have been lost through previous insensitive remodels. Much of their focus is on kitchens and bathrooms, but they can help with anything from finding hardware, color consults, to finding crafts people who understand historic buildings.

We asked owner Karla Pearlstein about her involvement with the AHC and she shared the following with us:

"Restoring History LLC is proud to be a member of the Architectural Heritage Center. We believe that the AHC provides educational opportunities that would otherwise not exist. Restoring History LLC. believes that the only way to save our heritage is through education, and the AHC provides exhibits, tours, and lectures to promote a better understanding of our architectural material culture. Restoring History LLC. supports the AHC's educational mission.

 Memories of our Founders

"I knew both of them as we used to vie for the spoils on the demolition sites. They always got there first! I met Jerry first, when I had a house with exceptional Povey stained glass windows. Jerry had to repair some broken glass - and he had fill-ins - just what the doctor ordered."

-- Bill Failing

Do you have a recollection of Jerry or Ben that you would like to share for publication or for our archives? Please contact Holly Chamberlain at hollyc@VisitAHC.org or 503-231-7264. Many thanks to those who have already sent in the reminiscences that help round out our organizational history.

 QUOTES & FACTS

A house is so much more than timber, cement, and mortar. It is a love-structure which stores up memories. It is security, shelter, healing, and peace. It is the shared joys, tears, dreams, and heartbreaks of several generations.
