Winter Education Programs start this week!
Craftsman Style and the Big Boom:
Building Portland's Classic Arts and Crafts Neighborhoods in the Early 20th Century Saturday, January 22 10:00 am - 11:30 am Members: $13 General Public: $18
Portland's population and wealth exploded in the years immediately after the Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1905, and style-conscious citizens turned to local architects to bring "modern" ideas to life in the new streetcar neighborhoods sprawling out from downtown. Some, like Emil Schacht and Joseph Jacobberger, quickly turned from their established Portland Victorian roots to Craftsman and Arts and Crafts styles. But they were quickly joined by newcomers familiar with eastern architectural trends, like Ellis Lawrence from Boston, Alfred Faber from Philadelphia, and John Bennes from Chicago.

"Aging In Place" - You & Your House are Getting Older! Saturday, January 29, 2011 10:00 am - Noon Members: $13 General Public: $18 We all love our vintage homes and their charming features such as porches, stair step approaches, multiple stories, and staircases to the upper floors and basements. But as our houses age, so do we...think of your house and you as "appreciating in value." As anyone who has had a mobility-limiting accident, such as a broken leg knows, however, we quickly find how challenging it is to navigate into and around our houses.
As we get older and deal with mobility limitations, sometimes we think we need to move from our wonderful vintage houses, and that's not necessarily the case. "Aging in place" is a growing field of house modifications that can be made to let us comfortably remain in our houses. The focus of our program is to learn about what modifications are available, and how we might plan them without damaging the historic features of our houses.

Pre-registration is Strongly Suggested This program is assisted by a Partners in the Field challenge grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. With support from: Oregon Cultural Trust and Multnomah County Cultural Coalition |

Save the Date--new solo artist exhibit in February
Photographer Doug Richardson Opening Reception Friday, Feb. 4th 6pm-8pm Free and open to the public
Work will be for sale with sales benefitting the artist and the AHC
I have been photographing the world around me for over thirty-five years. The last few years I have been exploring Portland's iconic places at night using film and long shutter speeds to capture familiar scenes in a different light. For me this creates an emotional experience that differs dramatically from daylight shots.

Volunteer Spotlight
Accomplishments at the AHC are often all about great people working hard towards a common goal. This week's spotlight is on...
Jim Paynter has been volunteering at the Architectural Heritage Center since he retired a year and a half ago from a long career in social services. In addition to manning the front desk and helping at the office, Jim's been involved in our kitchen and home tours, the Heritage Auction, and as an impromptu emcee for some of our Saturday education programs. Jim got involved with the AHC after attending a couple of our educational programs and coming to one of our volunteer orientations. "I've always been drawn to the aesthetic side of architecture" he says. "I was looking for opportunities to volunteer, broaden my horizons, learn new things... the AHC's been great." Growing up on the east coast, Jim had his interest in historic preservation fired by family trips to Colonial Williamsburg. "I was fascinated by Williamsburg... that's really where it all started for me," he says. He also had a front row seat for the city of Baltimore's efforts to restore and preserve neighborhood rowhouses, and in the late 1990s traveled to Havana, Cuba to document the restoration of the eclectic historic buildings the make up 'Old Havana.' When he's not at the AHC, Jim volunteers his time as a classroom assistant and reading tutor at the Portland Jewish Academy, where his wife teaches. He and his wife bought a historic Portland home 28 years ago and have been doing restoration projects (big and small) on it ever since. Thank you Jim for all of your contributions to the AHC!

Memories of our Founders
"I knew both of them as we used to vie for the spoils on the demolition sites. They always got there first! I met Jerry first, when I had a house with exceptional Povey stained glass windows. Jerry had to repair some broken glass - and he had fill-ins - just what the doctor ordered." -- Bill Failing Do you have a recollection of Jerry or Ben that you would like to share for publication or for our archives? Please contact Holly Chamberlain at hollyc@VisitAHC.org or 503-231-7264. Many thanks to those who have already sent in the reminiscences that help round out our organizational history. |

QUOTES & FACTS
"...it is again no question of expediency or feeling whether we shall preserve the buildings of past times or not. We have no right whatever to touch them. They are not ours. They belong partly to those who built them, and partly to all the generations of mankind who are to follow us."
-John Ruskin |
