The Quietude of Winter

Quietude of Winter CJ Hurley
Everyone at the AHC would like to thank artist and AHC member/volunteer, CJ Hurley, for the donation of his art for our 2010 holiday card.

The response from our members and supporters has been wonderful.  We appreciate your calls and notes commenting on the beautiful work.  CJ is offering the original painting for sale and will donate a % of the sale price to the AHC in support of our Educational Programs

The original painting is framed in a beautiful quarter-sawn oak frame and will be on display at the AHC through the month of January.  It is an intricate piece with lots of detail and texture that should be seen in person to fully appreciate it.  Stop by!

We also express our gratitude to Graphic Designer, Courtney Roby Sage for the donation of her graphic design services for the card.  Courtney is the designer for the AHC printed newsletter.

Craftsman StyleCraftsman Style and the Big Boom:

Building Portland's Classic Arts and Crafts Neighborhoods in the Early 20th Century

Saturday, January 22

10:00 am - 11:30 am

Members: $13

General Public: $18

Portland's population and wealth exploded in the years immediately after the Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1905, and style-conscious citizens turned to local architects to bring "modern" ideas to life in the new streetcar neighborhoods sprawling out from downtown. Some, like Emil Schacht and Joseph Jacobberger, quickly turned from their established Portland Victorian roots to Craftsman and Arts and Crafts styles. But they were quickly joined by newcomers familiar with eastern architectural trends, like Ellis Lawrence from Boston, Alfred Faber from Philadelphia, and John Bennes from Chicago.

"Aging In Place" - You & Your House are Getting Older!

Saturday, January 29, 2011    10:00 am - Noon

Members: $13    General Public: $18

We all love our vintage homes and their charming features such as porches, stair step approaches, multiple stories, and staircases to the upper floors and basements. But as our houses age, so do we...think of your house and you as "appreciating in value." As anyone who has had a mobility-limiting accident, such as a broken leg knows, however, we quickly find how challenging it is to navigate into and around our houses.

As we get older and deal with mobility limitations, sometimes we think we need to move from our wonderful vintage houses, and that's not necessarily the case. "Aging in place" is a growing field of house modifications that can be made to let us comfortably remain in our houses. The focus of our program is to learn about what modifications are available, and how we might plan them without damaging the historic features of our houses.

Volunteer Spotlight

Accomplishments at the AHC are often all about great people working hard towards a common goal.  This week's spotlight is on...

 Jim Paynter
Jim Paynter has been volunteering at the Architectural Heritage Center since he retired a year and a half ago from a long career in social services.  In addition to manning the front desk and helping at the office, Jim's been involved in our kitchen and home tours, the Heritage Auction, and as an impromptu emcee for some of our Saturday education programs.

Jim got involved with the AHC after attending a couple of our educational programs and coming to one of our volunteer orientations. "I've always been drawn to the aesthetic side of architecture" he says.  "I was looking for opportunities to volunteer, broaden my horizons, learn new things... the
AHC's been great."

Growing up on the east coast, Jim had his interest in historic preservation fired by family trips to Colonial Williamsburg.  "I was fascinated by Williamsburg... that's really where it all started for me," he says.  He also had a front row seat for the city of Baltimore's efforts to restore and preserve neighborhood rowhouses, and in the late 1990s traveled to Havana,
Cuba to document the restoration of the eclectic historic buildings the make up 'Old Havana.'

When he's not at the AHC, Jim volunteers his time as a classroom assistant and reading tutor at the Portland Jewish Academy, where his wife teaches.  He and his wife bought a historic Portland home 28 years ago and have been doing restoration projects (big and small) on it ever since.

Thank you Jim for all of your contributions to the AHC!

Golden Pass Winner!!

Congratulations to member Sandy Wilborn, winner of the drawing for the 2011 Golden Pass! Sandy will be able to attend every AHC education program in the coming year on a complimentary basis. The drawing was part of the Members and Volunteers Open House on December 15.

Our Members & Staff in the News!

Sam Hagerman of Hammer and Hand has been elected President of Passive House Alliance!  Sam will help the new organization promulgate the Passive House building standard across the U.S.
"The Alliance represents the next logical step for the expansion of the most rigorous, building-science-based sustainable building standard in the country," says Sam.  "And we're excited to be part of it!"  For more information, click here

Congratulations to staff member Holly Chamberlain, who contributed a chapter to Housing Washington: Two Centuries of Residential Development and Planning in the National Capital Area (Richard Longstreth, ed., Center for American Places with the University of Virginia Press, 2010). The chapter, which  discussed housing for war workers in and near Washington, D.C., was drawn from her Master's thesis on the Defense Homes Corporation, which constructed housing all over the nation.

If you are an active member or business member of the AHC, we want to hear about it when you win a preservation related award, have your work honored in an exhibit, have your restored home featured in a magazine.  Share your news with us at [email protected]

In the body of your email, please provide the following information:
  • a brief summary of the project, article, award, etc.
  • full website address of any links you wish to share regarding your recognition
  • Business members only - a link to your website and an attached logo (72dpi, 1"max)
We will do our best to recognize everyone, but we do edit content in our newsletter as necessary.

Two coats have recently been returned to their rightful owners. We are down to just one mystery garment -- a Columbia Sportswear light blue shell hooded jacket with navy trim, women's size L. If this belongs to you, let us know.
"AHC is AWESOME"

That's a direct quote from the Community Warehouse greeter who enthusiastically accepted the donations of household items that many of you brought to the AHC to contribute. Community Warehouse will use the sheets, towels, lamps, dishes, etc. for its "Home for the Holidays" project. Many thanks to all staff and members who made a donation.
 QUOTES & FACTS

"...it is again no question of expediency or feeling whether we shall preserve the buildings of past times or not. We have no right whatever to touch them. They are not ours. They belong partly to those who built them, and partly to all the generations of mankind who are to follow us."

-John Ruskin
