Our beautiful building offers an ideal location for presentation of 2 dimensional art and is a great place to invite your clients, family, and friends for an opening reception.

We are currently booking shows for 2011 and 2012 and invite our artist community to apply for a show.

Don't miss the last night of
Artist Insight Talks
and Community Conversations

This Week!
Friday, December 17th
Free and open to the public.
Light refreshments will be served.

Jeff SchnabelJeff Schnabel,
artist and assistant professor of Architecture, PSUwill address his connection to industrial sites and how these places with layered histories have transformed his thinking about site specific design and have provided the foundation for his artistic endeavors. He will discuss how the primary themes of his work were realized in each form and why encaustic now appears to be the most appropriate way for him to express his ideas.

Special Guest William C. Tripp,
Architect, will speak on Architecture and Nature:  The Role of Ritual Space

The relationship of architecture to nature is a little bit like the relationship of mind to body. Architecture is built from materials found in nature, whether we use them raw or highly processed. We all live in the natural realm; it's just a matter of our level of detachment.

In this talk Bill will show images of some of the ritual spaces that his team has designed and describe the rituals themselves, many of which they have also designed. Within this framework they are discovering a language of ritual space and ways to weave it into the fabric of our community.

 Our Members in the News!

Local designer and AHC member Bo Sullivan, owner of Arcalus Period Design and historian at Rejuvenation, has been writing a regular feature for Old-House Journal during 2010, and it will continue through 2011. "A Page from History" is a series that takes an informative and often humorous look at a single page drawn from one of the thousands of original period trade
catalogs in the Arcalus Archive.  Topics are usually related to article themes in each issue and have recently included colorful shutter treatments from 1940, elaborate parquet floors of the 1890s, and the use of nudity to sell Victorian bath tubs.  The February-March issue will look at Arts & Crafts wallpapers and include a special feature on Portland old-house
neighborhoods.

If you are an active member or business member of the AHC, we want to hear about it when you win a preservation related award, have your work honored in an exhibit, have your restored home featured in a magazine.  Share your news with us at marketing@visitahc.org

In the body of your email, please provide the following information:
  • a brief summary of the project, article, award, etc.
  • full website address of any links you wish to share regarding your recognition
  • Business members only - a link to your website and an attached logo (72dpi, 1"max)
We will do our best to recognize everyone, but we do edit content in our newsletter as necessary.
Information sought on WPA, CWA, and PWA projects around the country

A graduate student in New Jersey is beginning a large scale research project on American historic preservation efforts of the 1930s and needs your help!  The proposed research project will focus primarily on historic sites that were reconstructed or restored using federal funds tied into New Deal work
relief programs such as the Civil Works Administration (CWA), Public Works Administration (PWA), and Works Progress Administration (WPA).  For example, in 1936 a project was undertaken in Trenton, NJ to restore the William Trent
House, the 1700s home of the founder of Trenton, and this project was completed in part by WPA and PWA funds.  Historic sites across America were preserved using these types of federal funds during the mid to late 1930s. If you know of any sites in your area that were reconstructed or restored using New Deal funds please email Lynne Calamia at L.calamia@gmail.com.
Your information will be helpful to her research and we will all look forward to her completed project!

 Holiday Community Help Project

The AHC is accepting donations of gently-used household items such as kitchenware, bedding, and bath towels to be given to the Community Warehouse "Home for the Holidays" project. Bring your contributions to the AHC through December 17 during any open hours (Wednesday - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) or special events and we will gladly add them to our staff and board donations. Items will be used by the Community Warehouse to help set up households for people in need. Thank you!
Does Your Company "Match"
Charitable Gifts?

Increase your giving potential by finding out whether your employer matches contributions to non-profit organizations. Your donation to the AHC (including membership) can often be doubled taking your donation to the next level and getting greater results for your efforts!
