Education Programs and Exhibits
Education program revenue supports AHC efforts to preserve the historic character and livability of our built environment, and to promote sustainability through the re-use of vintage buildings.
This Saturday! Artistry in Brick: The Distinctive Mid-Century Homes of Ken Birkemeier
Saturday, November 20, 2010 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Members: $13.00; Non Members: $18.00 The post-World War II building boom in Portland presented many opportunities for architects and builders to interpret their own versions of the "modern" home. Ken Birkemeier was one such Portland builder, who designed and constructed completely original homes during this period. Though also credited with building Colonials and conventional Ranch Style houses, the Birkemeier Modern home remains his most identifiable house type. These brick (or partially brick) houses often incorporated avant-garde or whimsical features in their design and looked forward to an optimistic future filled with technological promise. Pre-registration is strongly suggested.

ReBuilding South Portland Gallery Exhibit South Portland is one of Portland's "lost neighborhoods" and an important part of the city's historical memory. The neighborhood's size and proximity to downtown made it the most visible immigrant district in the city from the late 19th century and well into the 1950s.

Fostering Harmony:
The Symbiotic Relationship of Architecture and Nature
Artist Insight Talks and Community Conversations
In conjunction with this special exhibit, we will be hosting several opportunities for the public to engage in discussions about the relationship between architecture and nature.
Several of the exhibiting artists and a few special guests will be leading Community Conversations throughout November and December. Keep an eye out here for updates on the schedule make plans to attend. All talks begin at 6pm and are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Thursday, November 18th
CJ Hurley, painter, will lead a discussion about the interconnectedness of phenomena in our world, the impact our actions have on our world, our personal responsibility to ourselves and nature, and how this all relates back to the architecture of our built environment. He will provide insight into the importance of these ideas in his life and will discuss how these ideas are evident in his art, specifically discussing his piece: "The Birth of Architecture, Unity of Nature and Mind".
Special Guest Glenn Lamb, Director of Columbia Land Trust, will discuss the history of settlement in the west, more recent development patterns and trends, impacts from development on the natural world and new approaches to conserving our great natural resources while accommodating future population growth. Glenn welcomes questions and discussion from the audience.

Volunteer Spotlight
Accomplishments at the AHC are often all about great people working hard towards a common goal. We are occasionally putting our spotlight on our awesome volunteers and board members to help you get to know the people behind the scenes a little better. 81-year-old Jean Donly has been a dedicated AHC volunteer for more than five years. She has worked on the procurement committee for the Heritage Auction, and has contributed to the AHC's house and kitchen tours, among other volunteer projects. She also volunteers at the Portland Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery.
Jean believes that the AHC does a wonderful job in its preservation efforts, and is drawn to the organization because of her deep-set love and appreciation for architecture, design, and art. A retired interior decorator, she even has her own design philosophy: "scale and proportion, color and composition"-not just what's in style or popular at the moment.
Born and raised in Portland, Jean has lived in small towns in Southern Oregon and Northern California most of her life. In her late 20s/early 30s, she even spent four years on Prince Edward Island raising sheep while working at a department store! Nowadays Jean works on the occasional design project, enjoys the theater, and is an avid collector of bugs, fans, and bells. She is an animal lover and enjoys gambling and word puzzles. Here are a few more of Jean's favorite things:
Favorite Food: Anything sweet
Favorite Sport: Occasionally watches tennis
Favorite Music: Modern Jazz and Classical
Favorite Books: Mysteries
Most Important aspect of a dream House: Space

Our Members in the News!
Work by AHC Business Member, Mary McMurray, of Art First Colors for Architecture was featured in the recent AIA tour during the Portland Architecture and Design Festival.
The interior and exterior colors of the King Residence were designed by Mary. Mary tells us that "Architect Tim Schouten helped transform a modest bungalow into a beautiful home for a family of six with contemporary style, while preserving the character of the original structure."
