Saturday, November 20, 2010 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Members: $13.00; Non Members: $18.00 The post-World War II building boom in Portland presented many opportunities for architects and builders to interpret their own versions of the "modern" home. Ken Birkemeier was one such Portland builder, who designed and constructed completely original homes during this period. Though also credited with building Colonials and conventional Ranch Style houses, the Birkemeier Modern home remains his most identifiable house type. These brick (or partially brick) houses often incorporated avant-garde or whimsical features in their design and looked forward to an optimistic future filled with technological promise. Business Member Spotlight
AHC Business Members provide products and services pertinent to historic preservation and period-authentic renovation, and they support the mission and goals of our organization. Please consult the Resource Directory on our website and patronize these businesses first when you need professional services for your home projects and when you are looking for great cultural places to visit. Spotlight: Hammer and Hand
Hammer & Hand's ethos honors both the embodied energy and embodied narrative within every building. As a steward of Portland's built environment since 1995, the firm's state-of-the-art remodels, historically accurate restorations and new homes of lasting craft and beauty give physical expression to that ethos of stewardship. "Why do we support Architectural Heritage Center? Simple, really. We're committed to preservation, livability and sustainability, three cornerstones of AHC's mission. As remodelers and restorers, we operate every day in the rich ecosystem that is Portland's built environment. We wouldn't be able to do the kind of work that we love to do if AHC weren't working tirelessly to preserve and enhance this collective built heritage."

Preservation News!
BREAKING NEWS....ITS OFFICIAL - IRVIGTON IS NOW A NATIONAL REGISTER HISTORIC DISTRICT!
The Irvington Historic District was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service on October 22, 2010. Huge congratulations are in order to the dozens of volunteers whose efforts led and helped complete the district nomination, that was accepted by NPS as submitted. Irvington is now the city of Portland's largest National Register Historic District, providing residents and property owners with the means to determine the future of this historic neighborhood - through design review of new construction and alterations, and review of demolition applications. As an intact 20th Century "Streetcar Era Suburb" Irvington's long-recognized character is evident in its 2,800 historic buildings - now more than doubling Portland's National Register listings.
The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) will be providing more information and website links. We know just how much dedicated work went into preparing the nomination and look forward to continued work with the Irvington team! We also know that there are other significant neighborhoods with well-preserved historic buildings throughout the city - Portland has more than 60,000 buildings constructed before 1930. Greater recognition - and protection - of other neighborhoods is called for, and Irvington has certainly led by example.
