We are delighted to announce this year's Honorary Chair is Oregon's First Lady Mary Oberst. Oberst's passion for historic preservation runs deep and has earned her a National Main Street Leadership Award from the National Main Street Center in Washington D.C. for helping to restore the Oregon statewide Main Street Program which was developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. You can see why we are excited to have Oregon's First Lady supporting our cause!

Education Programs and Exhibits

Education program revenue supports AHC efforts to preserve the historic character and livability of our built environment, and to promote sustainability through the re-use of vintage buildings.

THIS WEEK!

How to Research the History of Your Home
Saturday, September 25, 2010
10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Members: $10
General Public: $15

Pre-registration is REQUIRED

Every wonder who lived in your house before you? ...Or what your house looked like originally? ...And why is there a bathroom on the back porch? Researching the history of your house can answer those questions and many others you might have, and can even shed light on the development of your neighborhood.

Please join us as historian Tibby O'Brien takes you through the steps to uncover the history of your vintage house (as well as any other building). Using online sources, local archives, and libraries, she will show you that the process is not so mysterious when you know what steps to follow and where to look.

This program is assisted by a Partners in the Field challenge grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

AHC Board Member Spotlight

Accomplishments at the AHC are often all about great people working hard towards a common goal.  We are occasionally putting our spotlight on our awesome volunteers and board members to help you get to know the people behind the scenes a little better.

Our marketing intern, Zander Veith, has been talking to interesting people and this weeks board member spotlight is on...

Carol MorganCarol MorganAs you know, the Bosco-Milligan Foundation has been working to preserve regional architectural heritage since 1987. Carol Morgan has been involved with the organization as a board member for nearly that long- 20 years more or less. That's an unrelenting dedication to an important causeif there ever was one.

Carol's love for historic houses and architecture goes back even further than her involvement with the Bosco-Milligan Foundation. Since moving to Portland in 1972, she has lived in a beautiful Victorian home built in 1890, located on the East side of Mt. Tabor, and now lives in a smaller 1892 Victorian home in the Irvington neighborhood. She has a strong interest in old houses- their history, preservation, and restoration. In Carol's words, her involvement with historic preservation is based on love and learning, not expertise. Frankly, as Carol exemplifies, love and learning often get a lot more done for a cause than does expertise alone. Accordingly, Carol would like to see the AHC "survive and thrive" in the future.

Currently, Carol considers herself a "professional volunteer" and a community outreach person. She is involved with three other organizations other than the AHC. She also spends her time with research and projects at her new (historic) house, reading, gardening, sewing, travel, leisurely hiking, restoring her grandfather's 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk, and cooking a lot (she is also a volunteer caterer). Here are a few more of Carol's favorite things:

Favorite Movie(s):  Field of Dreams, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harold  and Maude

Favorite Food:       Everything

Favorite Sport:      Football- Stanford Cardinal & San Francisco 49ers fan

Favorite Music:      Folk & Classical

Favorite Book(s):    To Kill a Mockingbird, English murder mysteries, historical novels, biographies

Most Important Aspect of a Dream House:  Great kitchen- modern conveniences, well thought out
