| Heritage Auction Kickoff, September 9!
Come one, come all - Heritage Auction Kickoff for volunteers will be Thursday, September 9, from 6-7:30 p.m. Whether you've already signed to help with the auction or you're just curious about the possibilities, join us at the Kickoff and find out what it's all about. (Please R.S.V.P to Ita by September 7.)
New volunteers are always welcome at the AHC. Explore the possibilities: regular office help, project work, occasional help, events, exhibits, library, collections, programs.

We have an ongoing program and offer internships each term. Applications are accepted via the submission of cover letters and resumes to the appropriate hiring manager.
We actively seek interns for positions in Marketing and Graphic Design, both starting in late September or early August.

Donation wish list
| We are so lucky to have generous supporters like all of you. All levels of support and participation in our programs are important and significant.
For those who prefer to make product donations, here a few things we could use at the center.
-Ground coffee for the kitchen.

AHC Monthly Art Exhibits are open to Member artists.

AHC Art exhibits are open to our business members, their employees, and our general membership. Our beautiful building offers an ideal location for presentation of 2 dimensional art and is a great place to invite your clients, family, and friends for an opening reception.
We are currently booking shows for 2011 and invite our artist community to apply for a show.
Corporate members: please pass this invitation along to painters, photographers and other 2d artists within your organization so everyone can enjoy the benefits of your membership.

Elegant Arches, Soaring Spans: The Bridges of Conde B. McCullough - Encore

Civil engineer and builder Conde Balcom McCullough left an awe-inspiring legacy of bridge design in Oregon that is impressive on an international scale. McCullough's bridges, primarily built between the two World Wars, were innovative in their use of reinforced-concrete arch construction. Of the nearly 600 bridges designed by McCullough and his staff, those along the Oregon Coast are some of the most beautiful.

Board Member Spotlight
Accomplishments at the AHC is often all about great people working hard towards a common goal. Starting this week, we will occasionally put our spotlight on our awesome volunteers and board members to help you get to know the people behind the scenes a little better. Our marketing intern, Zander Veith, has been helping us to get this spotlight started. This weeks board member spotlight is on...  Allen Tooke has
been involved with the Architectural Heritage Center as a member for a long
time- as long as it gets, in fact. At his old home, he used to buy parts from
none other than the AHC's founders, Jerry Bosco and Ben Milligan. A couple
of years ago, Allen became an AHC board member and is currently serving as the
Treasurer.
Allen's interest
in the AHC's purpose is well founded. He has been interested in old architecture
for a very long time, and believes that Portland has a rich history of
wonderful buildings and homes. However, he is also very aware that Portland has
lost too many great historic buildings simply because ignorance has prevailed
over preservation efforts. One of the most impactful examples for Allen is the
loss of the old theater on Grand Avenue near the AHC office. Allen strongly
believes in the importance of preserving history and beauty, and learning from
the past, while creating an effective balance of old and new. He also
recognizes that this goal can only be reached with the attention and support of
the community. When asked what
he would like to see happen at the AHC in the future, Allen had two main
desires- a sustainable funding base and an AHC-owned facility to house all of
the organization's collections in one location. He believes that fulfilling
these two goals would allow the AHC to strengthen its advocacy efforts and make
an even greater impact on preserving Portland's illustrious architectural
heritage. After owning a
wholesale electrical business for many years, Allen is now retired and has the
freedom to put his time into both the AHC and his many personal hobbies. These
hobbies include restoring old houses, fishing, and travel, which, fittingly,
often also includes fishing. Allen also has a small hobby vineyard in
Washington and has been involved in bicycle riding and bicycle advocacy since
the '60s. Here are just a few more of Allen's favorite things: Favorite
