Beverly Cleary's old neighborhood has changed little since the famous children's book author lived there in the 1920s and '30s. Adults who loved Cleary when they were children will enjoy this walking tour that takes participants to places where she and her characters lived, played, and went to school. It includes a visit to the old YMCA, now the NE Portland Community Center, and the old library building. You'll even get a chance to see period newspaper articles about places from Cleary's books. Freelance writer Polina Olsen, your guide, has contributed to national and local publications including Northwest Travel, Cat Fancy, and Country Woman. A contributing editor for the Jewish Review, she also leads tours through the South Portland immigrant area and has written three books on Portland's ethnic communities.

Business Member Spotlight

AHC Business Members provide products and services pertinent to historic preservation and period-authentic renovation, and they support the mission and goals of our organization.  Please consult the Resource Directory on our website and patronize these businesses first when you need professional services for your home projects.

Alice DuffSpotlight:

"Minis by Alice"
is a venture by long time AHC member, Alice Duff.  She recreates her clients favorite rooms or scenes in 1" scale:  one inch = one foot.

Remember Grandma's kitchen or Grandpa's workshop?  Alice can recreate it for you in a lovely miniature room for display in your home.  Or, create a miniature of your living room to set on your coffee table.  Her works are great conversation pieces!

Alice Duff has been an individual member of AHC almost since its inception, but recently became a business member.  In recent years, she has volunteered for the Kitchen Revival Tour, house tours, and the annual auction.  "I think volunteering in the community is important," she says, "and the AHC has such interesting things at which to volunteer!"

You can learn more about Mini's by Alice by emailing her at minisbyalice@yahoo.com and you can also find her brochure in the rack at AHC.

Did you know our founders?

We are making some changes to our database and want to keep better track of people who had a direct connection with either or both of our founders, Jerry Bosco and Ben Milligan. Perhaps you are a former student or bought stained glass from them? Maybe you met them at an estate sale? We'd appreciate knowing. Please send an email to hollyc@VisitAHC.org mentioning how you got to know them (and when, if you remember). Thank you!

PRESERVATION QUOTES

Donovan Rypkema: "...when [Richard Moe] does decide to retire, I think it's time to acknowledge a reality in the American preservation movement - that it overwhelmingly owes its existence and success to the efforts of women. The next National Trust president should be a woman."
