In the early twentieth century, concrete challenged Portland's ubiquitous timber as the building material of choice for "modern" residences. As early as 1906, Portland architects and builders had begun constructing homes from solid concrete blocks formed to look like stone. In following years, other local builders experimented with the "Edison mold"-houses built entirely of continuous poured concrete panels. Concrete houses never became the norm in Portland, but numerous examples can still be found in all quarters of the city.
Program attendees will be invited to attend an open house and will be provided with self-guided tour maps showing the locations of many of the homes mentioned during the lecture.

Business Member Spotlight
AHC Business Members provide products and services pertinent to historic preservation and period-authentic renovation, and they support the mission and goals of our organization. Please consult the Resource Directory on our website and patronize these businesses first when you need professional services for your home projects. Spotlight: McCoy Millwork offers a broad range of
historic architectural millwork, unparalleled in our area. They inventory
hundreds of mouldings, several lines of hardwood and softwood stair parts,
finish lumber, columns, mantels, and decorative items. McCoy has the products
to give your historic home the beauty and character you desire. They have an extensive showroom staffed
by accessible, friendly sales professionals, dedicated to helping their customers. McCoy is committed to providing
quality millwork, expert advice and exceptional service, with the goal of
realizing the dream of a beautiful home. They have been doing this since 1946. We
asked Gary Paquin why McCoy is a business member of the AHC and what the
AHC
means
to him and his team. "We are members of the AHC because our
collection of historic profiles reflects our enthusiasm for historic
architecture and its preservation.
The AHC is the perfect venue to get the word out to a like minded group
with the same enthusiasm. We love
being able to help people restore their old homes." www.mccoymillwork.com |
Meet our Interns
Beth Fisher |
FIRST HAWKINS INTERN
The AHC welcomes the first William J. Hawkins III FAIA Intern! Beth Fischer is a graduate student in art history at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she is emphasizing architectural history/preservation coursework. A Portland native, Beth traces the beginning of her interest in historic preservation to age seven, when she began leading "special assessment" tours of her historic Queen Anne-style family home. She received her BA in art history with honors from Williams College, where she also created exhibit support materials, performed event planning and marketing, and maintained content for a museum website. Her work at graduate school includes serving as a research assistant for three professors, and doing freelance graphic design and print consulting. Beth is already busy at the AHC. She has begun work designing an on-line exhibit on the history of cast-iron architecture in Portland.
Many thanks to all who contributed toward making this new annual internship possible. Additional donations to the intern fund in honor of Bill Hawkins' lifetime legacy of work in architecture and heritage preservation are welcome at www.visitahc.org or by mail to Bosco-Milligan Foundation.

Auction Donation Highlights
Auction donations have been rolling in but we're still needing more to hit our fund raising goals. Do you have a wine cellar that is bulging at the seams or maybe a great contact with a local vineyard?
We are seeking numerous wine donations. We are looking for individual bottles with a minimum retail value of $20 for our wall of wine (always a huge hit) AND we are looking for case donations for our dinner wine. If you or someone you know is a wine enthusiast, we could use your help procuring wine for this year's event.
