THIS WEEK. SPECIAL ALL DAY PROGRAM! Don't miss this fabulous opportunity to learn from a panel of presenters
assembling right here in Portland.

Mid-Century Modern and the Recent Past: Documentation and Preservation Saturday, June 19, 2010 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. All Tickets: $20, Includes Lunch
Pre-registration is REQUIRED
Buildings and residential enclaves from the mid-twentieth century are reaching and surpassing the 50 year mark, making them widely eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Yet preservationists still face a number of challenges, even when advocating for buildings that can now be recognized as officially "historic." Development pressures, the economy, and aging infrastructure-along with widespread misconceptions about the role of modern architecture in the U.S.-put these resources at risk in the Northwest and throughout the country. The recent discussion surrounding Memorial Coliseum brought this to our own backyard. We look at this debate as a new opportunity for our community to discuss Portland's architectural "recent past" and work to identify the significant buildings and landscapes that make that era-and our region-unique and memorable.
This program is assisted by a Partners in the Field challenge grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Business Member Spotlight
AHC Business Members provide products and services pertinent to historic preservation and period-authentic renovation, and they support the mission and goals of our organization. Please consult the Resource Directory on our website and patronize these businesses first when you need professional services for your home projects. Spotlight:
Venerable
Group, Inc. and its subsidiaries provide their clients with a full range of
professional real estate services and a team dedicated to the preservation and
adaptive reuse of historic properties. They are adept at handling the
site challenges and restrictions of buildings listed on the Historic National Register.
The firm also offers historic
preservation consulting with a range of services including tax
credit incentive programs. The company history in Portland dates to 1991 when
Art DeMuro combined his extensive real estate background with his passion for
historic preservation to form Venerable. The firm is committed to preserving
and revitalizing Oregon's historical resources and heritage through their work. We
asked Art why Venerable is a business member of the AHC and what the AHC
means
to him and his team. "Venerable's
core is historic preservation and we consider the AHC one of the most
prominent
preservation organizations active in education, networking, and
advocacy. We
have participated in, volunteered for and hosted multiple programs
provided by
the AHC and consider the organization a great portal to the preservation
community."Fire Station No. 7 at SE 11th & Stark. Renovation on this 1927 fire station was completed in March, 2010. The redevelopment of Fire Station No .7 has transformed it from a former fire station and maintenance facility, and later an auto repair shop, into highly desirable commercial space for firms looking for historic character with modern amenities. | If you
have a commercial historic building you would like to redevelop, lease or sell,
Venerable Group is a great resource.
You may reach them at 503-224-2446 or www.venerableproperties.com. |
Meet our Interns
Julia Canright, Graphic Design | Last week we said good bye to our spring Graphic Design and Marketing intern, Julia Canright. She shared a few thoughts about her internship.
"I have learned through this internship the great importance of designing and working with a specific audience in mind.
I think the most important thing that I have learned overall is that in a graphic design and marketing setting, work and ideas cannot be abjectly characterized as good or bad, but rather as fitting, right, appropriate, or not."
"My internship was very structured and focused. I always felt that I was working on something important, with specific goals and requirements. There were short projects and more direction in the beginning of my internship and then as time went on the projects became more long term and I had to work more independently. This internship has certainly made me feel more like a professional rather than a student."
A big thank you to Julia and well wishes for the next steps in her education and career development.
We welcome summer interns Beth Fisher, Christine Guyett, Kari Newhouse, and Alexander Veith. In the coming weeks, we will be introducing each of them here so keep an eye out. If you see them around the AHC, please welcome them and find out what great projects they are up to.

Auction Donation Highlights
Auction donations have been rolling in but we're still needing more to hit our fund raising goals.
Do you have a wine cellar that is bulging at the seams or maybe a great contact with a local vineyard?
We are seeking numerous wine donations. We are looking for individual bottles with a minimum retail value of $20 for our wall of wine (always a huge hit) AND we are looking for case donations for our dinner wine. If you or someone you know is a wine enthusiast, we could use your help procuring wine for this year's event.
