your computers and you have a machine that meets our needs, we would love for you to consider making a donation of your older machine to us.  Please
email Ken Hall at kenh@visitahc.org.

Mid-Century Modern and the Recent Past: Documentation and Preservation

All Tickets: $20, Includes Lunch

Buildings and residential enclaves from the mid-twentieth century are reaching and surpassing the 50 year mark, making them widely eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Yet preservationists still face a number of challenges, even when advocating for buildings that can now be recognized as officially "historic." Development pressures, the economy, and aging infrastructure-along with widespread misconceptions about the role of modern architecture in the U.S.-put these resources at risk in the Northwest and throughout the country. The recent discussion surrounding Memorial Coliseum brought this to our own backyard. We look at this debate as a new opportunity for our community to discuss Portland's architectural "recent past" and work to identify the significant buildings and landscapes that make that era-and our region-unique and memorable.

This program is assisted by a Partners in the Field challenge grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Business Member Spotlight

AHC Business Members provide products and services pertinent to historic preservation and period-authentic renovation, and they support the mission and goals of our organization.  Please consult the Resource Directory on our website and patronize these businesses first when you need professional services for your home projects.

MPF ConservationSpotlight:  MPF Conservation is a 35-year old restoration/preservation business.  The husband and wife team specialize in the reparation of upholstered and wooden objects in antique and modern furniture, traditional finishes, quilts, and textiles. They also restore or conserve upholstered walls, leather walls, murals, and traditional finishes on wooden trims in homes and other buildings.  Mitchell Powell is a Professional Associate in the AIC; Kate practiced corporate architecture before coming to the conservation business.  They will visit your home or business for consultations by appointment.

Kate and Mitchell are new to Portland and recently became business members of the AHC.  They chose to be involved with our organization because they are passionate about architecture and preserving our cultural heritage, and they appreciate the role the AHC takes as an active participant in that goal.  They plan to volunteer to help catalog and preserve the pieces of buildings we have at AHC and they hope to make some new friends in their new home!

PRESERVATION QUOTES

"Historic preservation makes sense in large measure because historic preservation makes dollars and cents, but it also saves dollars and cents. Historic preservation is a rational and effective economic response to over consumption. To make a new brick today to build a building on a site where there is already a building standing steals from two generations. It steals from the generation that built the brick originally by throwing away their asset before its work is done, and it steals from a future generation by using increasingly scarce natural resources today that should have been saved for tomorrow."

- Don Rykema

New Collections Exploration Tool
for AHC Visitors

Enjoy a virtual tour of our extensive array of architectural artifacts at a computer station in the main lobby.

While we cannot make all of our collections physically available for viewing, the computer station provides access to our database for researchers and those who just want to enjoy the beauty of the objects.

Safety concerns and staff availability limit visitation to our storage warehouses but the computer provides an overview of the broad range of items collected by Jerry Bosco and Ben Milligan, and those given to the organization by later donors. Some items, such as wallpaper fragments, are so fragile that they can only be unpacked rarely. If you have not been in for a while, come in and check it out!
