YAVNEH CAMPING TRIP

The 3rd annual Yavneh Family Shabbaton Camping Trip is scheduled for June 1-3, 2012, and will be held just 28 miles from Yavneh at Big Basin Redwood State Park - 21600 Big Basin Way, Boulder Creek, CA 95006-9064, at the Sequoia Group Campsite.

We have reserved a campsite for a maximum of 50 people and 1 car per family. This tent camping area is a group site with picnic tables, BBQ grills, firepit, and fully-equipped bathrooms. It is a beautiful area with hiking trails, tree shade, and a communal area for meals, services, and fun activities. We have put together a schedule which includes a talent show, a potluck Shabbat feast, Havdallah service, campfire sing-a-longs, s'mores, hikes, arts & crafts, story-telling, scavenger hunt, adult schmoozing, and more. It is destined to be a great time for all. The cost is $30 per person (2yrs old and under are free), and we urge you to sign-up as soon as possible, as there are only enough spaces at the main site for 50 people. Registration will be on a first come - first served basis.

There will be some food provided (purchased and prepared according to the Yavneh Day School kashrut policy.) One kosher BBQ grill will be made available. We encourage you to bring your own BBQ if you'd like. Also, there will be a potluck dinner and as we will be serving meat, we ask families to bring a non-dairy side-dish to share with the group. There will be a beer tent for the adults to do some tasting of organic, home-brewed beers. It is the parents' responsibility to keep their children shy of this area, for obvious reasons. If you play a musical instrument, bring it along! We will be making music around the campfire as kids eat s'mores and play with glow-sticks.

More information will be provided to families who register, as we get closer to the date of the camping trip. Please complete the registration form ASAP, along with payment in full, please  CLICK HERE for the registration form. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact Alan Josephson, YPA "Camping Chairperson" at: [email protected]

STANDARDIZED TESTING Grades 3-8

Across the grade levels and through the years, assessment is an important, ongoing part of the educational process here at Yavneh Day School. Teachers in grades JK through eight use a variety of assessment methods to monitor the acquisition of skills and concepts, including formal and informal observations, evaluation of individual and group projects, student self-assessment, parental input, teacher generated tests and quizzes, commercial assessment tools, and standardized testing.

As members of CAIS (California Association of Independent Schools), we administer the ERB (Educational Records Bureau) testing in grades three through eight. The results of these tests are used to evaluate student progress and to assess curriculum needs. Results are helpful in determining whether students are working to potential and/or being appropriately challenged. Additionally, results help us to determine strengths and weaknesses, examine test-taking strategies and skills, and diagnose needs in terms of instructional planning. Test scores are reviewed by the administration, our learning specialist, and classroom teachers. Results, along with interpretation guidelines, are mailed to parents during the summer.

The ERB tests will be administered during the week of

April 30th-May 4th   8:30-11:00AM. Daily.

We work to provide a "relaxed" atmosphere during the days of testing. There are breaks for snacks and outdoor time built into the schedule. How can you help your child to do his or her best? Parents and teachers can work to reduce anxiety related to test taking. A little bit of stress excites us and helps us to perform. Excessive stress can have the opposite effect. We need to encourage our students to do their very best, and reassure them that we know they can and will do this. Offer support and focus on their strengths and abilities, not on what they can't do well or have not yet learned. A positive attitude goes a long way. Sticking to routine is helpful. A good night's sleep, a well-balanced breakfast, and arriving at school on time are most important. Avoid appointments or disruptions in schedules during testing week. Often, if we are at our best, our children will be at their best.

Wear your YAVNEH shirt on Mondays!
Wearing a Yavneh Shirt each Monday is not a choice. It is a part of our dress code here at Yavneh. Please be sure that your child comes to school dressed appropriately each Monday so that they don't need to call home for an extra shirt. Thanks!
