ISB Makes A Difference In Helping Those In Need

  Summer Lunch Program 2012

In keeping with one of the core principles of Islam - helping those less fortunate than ourselves - ISB undertook a number of initiatives in 2011-12 to help alleviate other's suffering.

  • For seven years, under the leadership of Amani Elghoroury, the ISB teamed up with the Islamic Community Center of Atlanta (ICCA) and other faith organizations in Fayette County to participate in the annual Summer Lunch Program. The program provides free lunches during the summer months to school-aged children in Fayette County who normally receive free lunches during the school year. The program lasts through the months of June, July and August. "Here is a wonderful opportunity to give and make a difference," said Elghoroury.  On August 25, 2011 the role of the ISB was highlighted in Fayette County News.  In 2012, the Summer Lunch Program provided lunches to more than 300 children. The estimated cost for a child's lunch per week is $50 ($1500 to feed all 300 children per week). To sponsor a child's lunch per week or to make a general donation to the program, please mail checks to ISB Atlanta (tagged for Summer Lunch Program), P.O. Box 2608, Peachtree City, GA 30269.
  • On September 11, 2011, the ISB participated in the "Open Hands Meal Delivery," a project that delivers food to the hungry in Atlanta, organized by Hands on Atlanta. Elghoroury led the effort on behalf of the ISB. Dedicated as a "Day of Service," the ISB joined others on this day "to give back to the community by working together to help those in need," said Elghoroury.
  • From January 30, 2012 to March 7, 2012, the Muslim community of Georgia came together again to help alleviate hunger by donating food items. El-Ghoroury again spearheaded "Being Your Neighbors' Keeper" food drive for the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB). Four Atlanta mosques (the Islamic Society of South Atlanta, Masjid Al-Ihsaan, Roswell Community Masjid, and Islamic Community Center of Atlanta) reached out to their congregants and collected non-perishable food items.
  • On March 11, 2012, the ISB was represented at the 2012 Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) Hunger Walk/Run on March 11, 2012. An ISB table was set up under the Community Tent at the event, sharing the space with other community organizations. El-Ghoroury also led community members and friends of the ISB in the Walk/Run to raise awareness. There were more than 50 participants representing the ISB at the event.
