ISB Brings Films About Islam To Atlanta

In an effort to counter negative perceptions about Islam and stereotyping of Muslims, ISB took an active approach to promoting films that offered a balanced view of Muslims and their faith traditions.

  • On November 20, 2011, the ISB, the American Jewish Committee's Access, and the Temple's Open Jewish Project partnered together to bring back to Atlanta the film "Cousins of Faith," an ethnographic documentary comparing the daily life of an observant Muslim (ISB speaker Ehab Jaleel) and an observant Jew (Kivi Bernhard) both living in Atlanta. The film depicts the similarities between the two in terms of how they observe their respective faiths and live their lives focusing on how they pray, work and interact with their respective families.
  • In February 2012, The ISB partnered with the American Jewish Committee (AJC) - Atlanta chapter to present the movie "Free Men" at the 2012 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. "Free Men" is a film about the Great Mosque of Paris which became a sanctuary for Jews escaping persecution from the Nazis and giving them a safe haven during World War II (WWII). ISB's Imam Plemon El-Amin introduced the movie at its February 12, 2012 screening, while ISB Executive Director Soumaya Khalifa gave her remarks at the February 24, 2012 screening. Imam El-Amin provided the audience with historical background to Jewish-Muslim engagement, including the Nazi era in France, the film's time period. Khalifa, on the other hand, focussed on the interfaith work of the ISB naming specific examples of engagements with the Jewish community. Khalifa stressed that the best way to building better communities is by knowing and working with others.
  • On June 30, the ISB partnered with the Ismaili Council for the Southeastern USA to bring to Atlanta Unity Productions Foundation (UPF) film Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World, a documentary on the rich history of Islamic art. The event, which was Emceed by award winning television journalist Angela Robinson, was attended by an audience of nearly 400 people. The program began with opening and welcoming remarks from ISB Executive Director Soumaya Khalifa and Ismaili Council for the Southeastern USA President Aziz Hashim. The event featured Executive Producer and Co-Founder of UPF Michael Wolfe as guest speaker.
