ISB Promotes Religious Pluralism and Social Justice in America

Buds Event 2 One of ISB's most important accomplishments in 2011-2012 was its continued outreach efforts to build alliances and partnerships with similarly-minded faith-based organizations for the goal of promoting religious pluralism and tolerance.

  • On September 15, 2011, the ISB joined BUDS (Building Understanding) and the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change in hosting a panel discussion on religious pluralism and social justice. ISB Executive Director Soumaya Khalifa and BUDS Executive Director Daniel Shorr served as co-moderators for a panel discussion that called on Americans to promote voices for freedom and oppose voices of extremism in every faith community. "From Fear to Faith: A Call for Positive Religious Pluralism in American Life" was presented by Clergy Beyond Borders (CBB), an organization that empowers religious leaders to utilize the resources of their diverse religious traditions in promoting dialogue, inter-religious understanding, justice, and world peace. The discussion was part of a national-based campaign by CBB stating that attacks on any faith community and on the freedom of religion promotes extremism and threatens peace in America and abroad.
  • On October 31, 2011, Khalifa participated in the second part of a two-part panel series presented by the Istanbul Center. "Politics of Exclusion: Extremism & Imagining the 'Other'" addressed questions related to multiculturalism and religious pluralism, Islamophobia, the role of the media in influencing social attitudes towards "the other," and the importance and effectiveness of inter-religious and intercultural dialogue and education efforts and organizations.
