Speaker Spotlight
Huma Faruqi
ISBA has more than 30 trained, certified volunteer speakers who represent various professional, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Our Speaker Spotlight section is meant to provide some insight into the backgrounds and thoughts of our speakers.
This month, we are speaking with Huma Faruqi. Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Huma and her family came to the United States in 1998. She is a wife, a mother, a grandmother and an alum of the University of London, where she got her degree in teaching for special needs.
Speaker Spotlight: Huma, thank you for your time today. Can you share with us why you joined ISBA?
Huma: I was disappointed with the media's portrayal of Islam and Muslims after September 11. I began sharing leaflets to educate others about the true meaning of Islam. Through a mutual friend, I was introduced to the ISBA. The ISBA gave me an opportunity to reach out to more people than I could ever have reached alone.
Speaker Spotlight: How has becoming a speaker with the ISBA helped you grow personally or professionally?
Huma: Being a speaker withthe ISBA has given me a lot more confidence in public speaking.
Speaker Spotlight: Have your perceptions of Islam or other faiths changed?
Huma: It is always interesting to see people's reaction when they find out how much their own belief system and Islam have in common.
Speaker Spotlight:
Thank you, Huma, for taking the time to share your thoughts. |

A Prince Among Slaves premiers on August 25 at the Rialto Center for the Arts. The 60 minute documentary is part of a national launch and is intended for broadcast on Public Broadcasting Service in early 2008.
A VIP reception prior to the premiere is planned with Atlanta leaders from African American, religious, cultural, educational, faith-based and peace organizations attending. | |
