The Gift of Time

At this time of year, as thoughts turn to gratitude and gifts, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for coming back each month to visit via this e-newsletter, for being supportive and passing it along to others and most importantly, for all the great questions!  Your questions help guide my content, define the classes I offer and help me expand the services I provide. They keep me on my toes and keep me in touch with why I do this - to help YOU!  I truly enjoy teaching and sharing what I know and love - thank you for engaging!

And as for gifts, in my opinion, the most valuable thing I can offer is the gift of time.  Here are a few tips, tools and hints that I hope will give you just that - time that you can then use as you please. Enjoy!

Claiming a Vanity URL on Linked IN

Linked In Vanity URL

A "Vanity URL" is a custom address for your Linked In profile, allowing you to have an address like:
http://www.linkedin.com/in/lisamariedias
rather than your name, with dashes and a long string of numbers after it.

A vanity URL is easier to share, especially in print. (Hint: include it on your business card!)

Did you know?

On Linked In, you can now only see contact info and last names for 1st and 2nd degree connections.

What this means: Now, when searching on Linked In, you will only see full names and contact info for your 1st and 2nd level connections.  Others will have only a first name and last initial and even if they have chosen to display their email and phone number, it will not be visible to you.

Why you may be concerned: This makes it more difficult to make connections and effectively search outside your immediate network.

Why LI did this: They are making these changes to encourage people to subscribe to LI, rather than to use it as a free service.

What you can do: You can choose to upgrade to the paid version of LI but at $99/ month (for the lowest level package) I think that only true, hardcore, networkers need to consider that option.  A much more cost effective way to optimize your use of the free version of LI is to make sure that you connect to all relevant people.

While I am not advocating inviting everyone in your address book, nor accepting every invitation, do make an effort to connect to anyone that you currently work with, know or went to school with.  Consider joining groups that focus on your professional and/or outside interests.  This way, when you are searching outside your immediate network, you increase the odds that someone you ARE connected to will be connected to the person you wish to meet, making them a second degree connection and thus, easier to contact.
Actively connecting with other professionals on Linked In is the key to optimizing your use of this powerful tool.

E-Newsletter Tip of the Month
Do you have a Facebook Page for Business and a Constant Contact account for your e-newsletter?

If you do, Constant Contact offers an application to add a tab to your Facebook business page.  Called "Join my List" , visitors can sign up there and the address will be funneled directly to the CC list of your choice (Hint: create a separate list if you want to keep track of the number of people joining via your FB page)

And CC now allows you to add an image file (photo or logo) to the "Join Our List" tab.  It still has that generic blue background with the outline of people but at least you can add a touch of your branding!
