Breaking Through the "Twitter Branch Ceiling"

What to do when Twitter will not let you follow more than 2000 people

When you are new to Twitter, much of the fun is figuring it all out, finding cool people to follow and joining interesting tribes. Whether you started by following friends, or used some tools to find people of interest, there is often a whirlwind of activity when getting your account off the ground.

If, like many of us, you really liked Twitter, you probably found the number of people you followed, growing daily.  While you may have been keeping an eye on how many followed you back, it probably wasn't that important to you, especially when you were first getting started.

Then one day you see someone you want to follow, click on the little icon under their image and get that dreaded message that you are not able to add any more followers at this time. A quick look at the stats in your sidebar will probably tell you why - you are following 2000 people; you have hit the 'twitter branch ceiling'.

Do you use LinkedIn?

Some tips to make it more likely that people will accept your invitations.

When sending a LinkedIn invitation, keep the following in mind:

Remind the person how you know them - did you work together, go to the same school,  or volunteer together?  Even if it was just meeting them this morning at a networking event, a reminder can mean the difference between an 'accept' and 'IDK ' (I don't know this person).

Unless someone indicates that they are a LION (LinkedIn Open Networker - someone that links to ANYone), make sure that there is a legitimate reason for the invitation.  Being a fan of someone's work can be a valid reason but make sure to include this in your note.

By taking an extra minute or two to personalize the invitation rather than just sending the basic form letter they provide, you show the invitee that you are really interested in linking and will be a valuable connection.

Exporting from LI
Did you know that you can export any LinkedIn connection's contact info into a VCARD by clicking on the little icon on the right of the link's profile?

And you can export any of your Outlook contacts directly into your Constant Contact account by downloading the helpful Constant Contact "QuickImport" tool.

Remember to segment your contacts before you upload them to Constant Contact whenever possible!

Sharing on LinkedIn...
There are numerous ways to communicate on LinkedIn:
  • Contact your connections directly, by message.
  • Contact them indirectly, by posting an update in your status bar (Posting can be done in the LinkedIn status bar or via Twitter by adding the characters #in to any tweet)
  • Your connections will also be notified, on their homepage, whenever you update your profile, add a connection, ask or answer a question and give or receive a recommendation.

Keep this in mind as you plan your posts so you do not 'over-communicate'. Unlike Twitter, where a constant stream of tweets is acceptable, periodic updates are more appropriate on LinkedIn.
