New Designs, New Colors!
Well, Fall is really here - though you may need to check the calendar to confirm it! While you certainly wouldn't know it from the lovely summer-like weather we had this past week, soon the weather will be cooling down, the leaves will be changing color and the kids will actually be in school for entire weeks at a time. It's time to think about warmer clothing, cuddly sweaters and NEW jewels!
We have lots of Fabulous NEW colors and designs to celebrate the season! Warmer tones that look great with your sweaters, bright colors to accent that Grey clothing that is so popular right now and plenty of cool and unique accessories like the stamp pendants and chain, chain, chain!
Our most popular design right now, hands down, is the lampwork bead and link pieces with the dangles! Available as Bracelets, Earrings or Necklaces and in a bunch of fabulous color combinations, these were selling out as quickly as I could make them! But I have been really busy working and we have stocked up on some GREAT combinations - you can see some of them on the website at www.LisaMarieDiasDesigns.com (type 'lampwork' into the search box), stop by a show or call for an appointment. There will be new and different combinations available each week, many of which will not make it to the website. If you would like to see scans of what we have, or to order multiples for the Holidays, please email me at LMD@LisaMarieDiasDesigns.com.
And because the lampwork bead pieces are so popular, I have invited the woman that designs the beads, Qinyi Ma, to visit us! In the 'interview' below (done via email) she talks a bit about herself, about how the beads are created and how she comes up with her gorgeous designs!
And Kerry, our resident Stylist, is here to give us a very cool 'Insider's' view of Fashion Week in New York! Check it out in the sidebar to the right.
I hope that you will enjoy the articles, learn something new and that we will see you sometime soon at an upcoming show, appointment or event!
Enjoy! |
Lampwork Bead Artist Qinyi Ma!
Here is an excerpt of my 'interview' with Qinyi Ma conducted via email, earlier this month. To see the full interview, including more photos, please visit the new web page Visiting Artists Web Page.
Q: Please explain briefly how "lampworked" beads are made.
A: Thousands of years ago, artists in Italy used lamps to heat the glass to make beads. "Lampwork" is a term used to describe the beads made by this process. We now use a similar method but we use a torch instead of a lamp. The flame from the torch can be over one thousand degrees. You hold a steel stringer (which we call a mandrel) in your left hand and your right hand holds a glass rod, like holding a pencil. You melt the glass rod tip over the flame and wind the molten glass on the mandrel. You must keep rotating the mandrel. The molten glass looks like honey and gravity makes it drop. Rotating the mandrel will prevent the glass from dropping and finally turn it into a round bead.
The pictures show how to apply stringer on a base bead. Normally, the glass rod is as thick as a pencil. The stringer is pre-made by pulling the molten glass apart.
Q: How long does a typical lentil style bead take to make
A: 10 minutes, not including clean up and annealing time. We are very fast compared with other lampworkers!
Q: Do you make every bead yourself?
A: I used to do every single bead by myself. After I started to do the bead shows, I realized that there was too much work for one person. So I trained workers to help me make the beads. Now I only focus on design.
Q: How many people help you?
A: Totally 10. Some of them are part time.
Q: Where are they located?
A: San Jose, California
Q: Why did you become a lampwork artist?
A: I love lampwork beads and I love to create something special. It's a lot of fun to discover new techniques and to create new designs.
Q: Where did you learn to be a lampworker?
A: In my apartment in San Jose, California! I pulled out the cutting board and clasped the torch to it. At the very beginning, when I started it, the heated glass rods would easily pop out. Those scary hot glass tips left some burn marks on the floor. I'm lucky that I didn't burn down the apartment!
Q: Where do you get your ideas?
A: At the very beginning, I learned the techniques from books and videos, following their instructions. Then I got ideas from gem stones, handbags, clothing, fabric, fashion, etc. It's about everything I see. One of my customers painted her nails turquoise and added gold leaf - I used the idea in my beads!
Q: How many different designs do you have in production at any one time?
A: I normally have a work plan. Each worker works on a certain design. We do one design at a time, which is more efficient. Normally, we have 150+ designs we need to work on each month!
Q: What are your best selling colors?
A: Pink, neutral colors, green, blue.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to talk about?
A: The glass I use is Moretti, which is the same glass as Venetian beads. Some of the special colors come from Germany. I like high quality products; I want to share the same value with my customers. I hope they enjoy the detail of the designs too. |

Come Backstage to the Fall Fashion Shows in New York
by Kerry Cordero
As a Personal Stylist, my roles can be very varied. Not only do I get to work with fabulous individual clients and speak on fashion and image at events, I also get to work as a Supervisor on a dressing team at New York Fashion Week. And I tend to love the Fall Fashion Shows the most - the combination of new designer collections along with those bright but short autumn days make me so psyched to empty the closet of linen and bring out the boots (or booties for this year)!
For a peek inside, follow me to my favorite collection, Sabyasachi Mukherjee who is an Indian designer that is well-known in his home country. Downtown met Delhi in this collection of luscious traditional Indian fabrics interpreted in current long, flowing layered shapes, exquisitely embroidered silk headbands and trims, rich colors combined with military green and chunky flat sneakers.
So come on in! First we pick up credentials at the Promenade Tent backstage entrance with Eric. We love Eric because he recognizes everyone that really needs to get in and gives you a big smile and hug before we head into the crush. Pass Hair and Makeup where the models are prepping and head into where they'll dress. Sabyasachi's styling team is super organized and the designer himself is working with us to set up the clothes and execute the looks. After checking in the dresser team, we pair them up with their model and they report to the racks. All the clothes are checked to make sure they will go out looking exactly like the model card pics and then the call comes for "first looks."
Showtime! Everyone wonders about models and what they are like - really they are mostly very nice and very young girls from all over the world that are tall and thin and love to dress up and mug for the camera!
Now it's on to the next show. For me, it's Costello Tagliapietra and another chance to see and touch more finely crafted, stunningly designed, highest-quality creations.

More Stamp Pendants have arrived!
The Chinese stamps I had made into pendants have arrived and they look FABULOUS!
There are only a few of them so if you would like me to send you a scan or to put one on hold please let me know.
I also have two pendants I had made with Black and White photos from Paris - one is an image of the Eiffel Tower (artistically cropped, not the full tower), the other is of the clock at the Musee D'Orsay. They are VERY cool! If you are interested in seeing scans of these, or would like me to put one of them on hold for you, please call or email.
And due to popular demand, I have ordered some more Israeli stamp pendants - I should have scans of those ready by next week. If you are interested in ordering any for holiday gifts, please let me know ASAP as the holidays are early this year! | |
