Pearls for everyone!

FWP-1
While shopping in China this past month, I brought back lots of Fabulous surprises for the Fall!

We saw fresh water pearls being 'harvested' from clams (there were about 20 tiny seed pearls in the clam we opened!), discovered how the colors are 'naturally' created (it has to do with the minerals used to 'start' the pearl) and literally fought off aggressive sales people in our search for the most beautiful pearls for you!
I also found beautiful stamps which I will have made into pendants, some unusual Mother of Pearl Crosses and  Pearls, Pearls, Pearls!  There are many colors, shapes and sizes - I think you will be happily surprised by the selection!
Pieces will be ready for sale in September, but if you would like a preview, call or email to see scans!

And speaking of pearls....
Cool things I learned about pearls during my travels!

FWP-3

The following are some interesting things I learned during my visits to a Pearl Factory and the Beijing Pearl Market.

To see if a strand of pearls are "real", use your teeth!  Real Pearls will have a 'sandy' feel,  fake ones will be 'smooth'.  You can scrape the surface of "real" pearls with a blade or scissors without damaging them.  The outer coating of fake pearls will flake off, revealing the dull, plastic core.

To care for your pearls, do not rub or scratch them - after that first test, protect that natural finish!  Store them separately, preferably in a cloth, to avoid scratches.  Do not let pearls come in contact with acid or soda which will corrode them.  Avoid contact with harsh soaps, perfume or hair sprays and gels.   Do not wear them while bathing, sleeping or swimming.

To clean them, you can wash them with a gentle soap, drying them with a soft cloth.

To keep them lustrous, wear them often!
Beijing to host the 2008 Summer Olympics
Mascots

Throughout Beijing and it's suburbs, the mascots shown here adorn everything from billboards to tee-shirts to buses and baseball caps.  Their names, BeiBei, JingJing, HuanHuan,YingYing and NiNi translate to "Beijing Welcomes You!"

Everywhere you go, preparations are being made for the upcoming Summer (2008) Olympic Games.

An entire area of the city is being rebuilt to create the Olympic Village which will house the events and the athletes, crowned by  an amazing new stadium, referred to as 'the Birdsnest' due to it's very cool twiglike design.

EVERYONE is extremely proud and excited to be hosting this international extravaganza!  Throughout the city, there are large pillars with digital clocks counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until the Opening Ceremony on August 8th, 2008.
The Chinese believe that various numbers carry different meanings - 9 means longevity, 4 is a bad number (avoided in all things like we avoid the number 13) and the number 8 means good business.  With the games beginning on 08/08/08, I am confident that this will prove true!

Adding Interest to a Summer Wardrobe!

by Kerry Cordero

During the month of July, I had the good fortune to present a style program to the members of Gilda's Club of New York City.

The Club, located  in a beautiful townhouse setting, offers support and networking groups, lectures, workshops and social events to men, women and children who are living with cancer and to their families and friends.

The presentation covered ways to use accessories, jewelry and scarves in particular, to add vitality and visual interest to an existing summer wardrobe.

Members who attended the program felt the event showed them how to focus on looking beautiful right now, no matter the circumstances.

A portion of the talk focused on understanding the healing properties of various stones, how they can enhance wellness and add vitality to our wardrobes right now, today.

Did you know that amethyst is thought to bring tranquility, calm, peace and harmony?  Or, that sapphires are regarded as bringing out your best and can help make your dreams come true?

Whatever your feelings about stones, wearing beautifully shaped and colorful jewelry will uplift you and add style to your day.
