Daniel E. SMITH

david smith 1  For Daniel E. Smith, life experiences that are rich and deep rooted have become a treasure-trove from which he draws vision and gains insight. Smith was born into a very large family and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He holds a Master of Science in Education and was a member of a teaching order of Monks. With his community's support, he left the Monk's order in pursuit of an MFA at Savannah College of Art & Design. After graduating, he became a full-time artist and has studied at the Center Academy of Art & Design in Beijing China and then followed with a painting sabbatical near Sienna, Italy. Although fortune continues to smile on Smith and opportunities continue to present themselves, it is only because of his genuine hard-work ethics that he is presently in numerous collections across the globe, such as; Australia, Aruba, Antigua, Canada, China, England, Italy, Netherlands, Norway,  Switzerland, and throughout the U.S. His first museum show was at The Telfair Museum of Art here in Savannah, Georgia in 2005. Twelve of his paintings are now included in their permanent collection. Each of Smith's paintings shows his love and passion for color, surface, space, and form. In all of his work, he explores technique, accepts change, and quests for depth of emotion and spirit. Smith allows former images and painting decisions to persist beneath the surface as evidence of the adventurous expedition. There are allusions to human-created, utilitarian spaces, as well as, ordered glances of the natural world. Smith's works are an offering of continuance, recollection, discovery, and hope.

New Work
David Kaminsky

Tom's Creek #4

Scott Adams once boldly stated, "Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep". It can be said that that is how David Kaminsky brought about a revolutionary new series of photographs that changes our perception of what a photograph is.

Kaminsky, a native of Miami, Florida, received a Master of Fine Arts in Photography at the University of Florida and has worked as a staff photographer for the Historic Preservation Section of Georgia's Department of Natural Resources. It was in 1980, that David and his wife Betsy moved to Savannah, where David taught photography at Savannah College of Art and Design. And in 1982 he started Savannah Color Separations, Inc., providing color separations for printers and publishers. Since then the business has expanded into high resolution digital photography and giclee printing for local and regional artists.

This series of abstracted photos was inspired a few years ago by a problem that would occasionally occur when printing with large format ink-jet printers. Instead of each pass of the print-head revealing a bit more of an image, at some point the printer would repeat the same line of pixels over and over, essentially taking a tiny bit of visual information, stretching and magnifying it in one direction. Even though there was minimal visual information the resulting image always had a strong relationship to the image that had spawned it. More importantly, the images were sometimes quite beautiful. And so Kaminsky decided that he could use this technique to create an image that while it has minimal visual information still reveals an essential part of the scene. Even though the photographs only have one pixel worth of information in any one direction they still function as some sort of true representation of their subject.

For David Kaminsky, complete and thorough knowledge of the technology that he works with every day has inspired in him the creative process and generated an art form previously unexplored.
