  "Living Maya"
"Living Maya" is an inspired view of the northern Yucatan coast and it's people by Richard Leo Johnson.  Johnson and his wife purchased a small piece of property near the tiny fishing village of San Crisanto. The photographs on exhibition, taken in July of this year, "portray the simple and purposeful life of an ancient people in modern times." Johnson used a turn-of-the-century 8"x10" view camera.  The original film was digitally scanned then printed with archival ink jet technology for true and permanent results replicating as close as possible the nature of the original.
Johnson received an MFA from Louisiana Tech in 1984, and the bulk of his work has been commercial in nature, primarily architectural. However, his earliest influences were Henri Cartier Bresson and Walker Evans, both masters of fine art documentary photography.  His photographs can be found in the permanent collections of the Corcoran Museum (Wash. D.C.) and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

This exhibition will also feature an "original musical score" created by Richard Leo Johnson.

Richard 's acoustic guitar music has been featured on NPR's Fresh Air by Milo Miles (March 29, 2006), and he has been called one of the most innovative and inspired acoustic guitarists on the current American music scene.  Amazon.com's editors called Johnson "perhaps the next in a short line of guitar greats-a line that includes Pat Metheny, Sonny Sharrock, and a few others," while Playboy touted him as "the most innovative guitarist since Jim Hendrix."

You can learn more about Richard Leo Johnson's music by visiting www.richardleojohnson.com/guitar

Opening reception
: Saturday, Sept 27th, 2008:  6-9pm
Exhibit will be on display for 6 weeks.

New Artist: Laura DiNello

Laura Di Nello   Laura DiNello is one of the Southeast's most popular and prolific painters, known for her imaginative and colorful work with musical and  figurative themes.  Although Laura was born in Chicago, she moved to Savannah over twenty years ago. She began painting soon after arriving, and by happenstance she quickly developed her mosaic-signature style. One night, out of frustration and self-doubt, Laura cut up a week's worth of paintings . The next morning after realizing what she had done, she began piecing the paintings back together.  Something clicked for Laura and she continued cutting & piecing the canvases into a style of painting all her own. She never looked back and has exhibited in numerous galleries and museums such as the Worth Museum and the International Interior Design Show in Wash D.C.  Her work can also be seen in many public collections such as the Westin Grand Bohemian in Orlando, FL. We welcome DiNello to Chroma Gallery.

Nathaniel Hester's handmade serigraphs (silkscreen prints) are a joy to look at. Chroma is now carrying a series titled "Animal Farm" which was inspired by nature and the animals he enjoys daily on his remote farm in North Carolina.
Nate Hester grew up in Raleigh N.C. After earning a B.A. in both studio art and art history at Rice University, he left for Europe on a Clyde Ferguson Bull Traveling Fellowship.  He has studied in Paris, Italy, New York and California.  In 2005
he completed an MFA at Boston University.

Hester's work has been exhibited in numerous shows across the nation and is part of the permanent collection at Harvard's Fogg Art Museum. His work can be found at the University of Miami, the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College, as well as private and corporate collections worlwide. Dr. Larry Wheeler, director of the North Carolina Mueum of Art, writes, "Nate Hester is able to capture complex ideas often layered in his elegant prints.  This is an achievement attained only by master printmakers. And he is one."  We welcome Nate to Chroma.
