NIGHTHAWK & SWEETGRASS
|
|
This month we are featuring an exhibition by two of our favorite artists, Aaron Memmott & Lori Keith Robinson. The show is titled "Nighthawk & Sweetgrass" and features Aaron's unique views of downtown Savannah during the twilight hours along with Lori's spectacular views of sweetgrass and marshlands. Together they say "Savannah" as no outsider can.
LORI KEITH ROBINSON Southern Sweetgrass No.1 24"x36" Oil on Canvas Lori's "Sweetgrass Landscapes" have a new simplicity of form and looseness of stroke that bring to mind the paintings of Richard Diebenkorn and other abstract expressionists during the early 1950's. This new work of Lori's seems to move beyond naturalistic color and figurative forms and into the realm of abstract painting. Lori states, "My goal for this new body of work was to push myself past my comfort zone and allow my mark making to be less controlled. I was seeking an energetic abandonment of stroke while maintaining the fundamental design inherent to a landscape." The results of her efforts have her moving into a more mature body of work. She continues to paint her beloved marshes but with a clearer vision of contemporary painting. A quote from Paul Cezanne enlightens us not only to his perspective but also the perspective of many artists including Lori. "Painting from nature is not copying the object, it is realizing one's sensations."

AARON MEMMOTT
For this show, Memmott offers us a glimpse of his artistic sensibilities and allows us to become privy to his perspective of Savannah at twilight. We are, at once, drawn into the paintings by his technical fluency and quickly become aware of his passion for painting. Memmott uses gleaming colored tones that create a dynamic interplay between light and color. His distinct value contrasts create rhythm and harmony throughout the works. With this exhibition, we are better able to appreciate his oblique perspective of the urban landscape. Aaron is constantly inspired by his surroundings and has focused his vision on capturing the magical hours of the evening, "when lights flicker and dance." It should come as no surprise that the work of Edward Hopper has long been a source of inspiration to Aaron. So with his dynamic and hawk eye perspective and with homage to Hopper, the title "Nighthawk" for Memmott's current exhibition seemed naturally fitting.
