Garden Checklist for May
Continue planting annuals and perennials.
Choose summer veggies by the end of this month for best selection.
Some hard to find shrubs are at the peak of their availability now.
Prune spring-blooming shrubs that have finished such as forsythia, azaleas and spring-blooming spirea.
Apply systemic insecticide to azaleas to prevent lacebug damage.
Lawncare (mid to late May): Apply fertilome Lawnfood Plus Iron to zoysia and bermuda lawns and fertilome 15-0-15 to centipede lawns. |

Caladiums:
Height & Color for Deep Shade
The large, vibrantly-colored leaves of caladiums add a dramatic touch to shady spots in the garden. All caladiums do well in shade, but some can take a few hours of sun (see list below). They can be planted in containers or flower beds, and here's a money-saving tip: In late fall, cut the caladiums back, dig up the bulbs, clean off and dry, then store in a cool, dry place through the winter. Re-plant in spring, after the last frost.
WHICH CALADIUM SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Tall-Growing Shade Lovers: 'Postman Joyner' 'Florida Cardinal' 'Florida Moonlight' 'Pink Beauty' 'Red Flash' 'White Christmas'
Dwarf Shade-Lovers: 'Candidum Jr.' 'Gingerland' 'Miss Muffet'
Sun-Tolerant Varieties: 'Aaron' 'Candyland' 'Carolyn Whorton' 'Florida Sweetheart' 'Gingerland' 'Miss Muffet' 'White Delight' 'White Queen' |
Fountain Grass Deserves a Second Look

The fountain grass family has expanded! In years past we have carried the very popular purple fountain grass, loved for its tall, wispy habit and extreme tolerance of sun, heat and drought (one of the most low-maintenance options out there!). New varieties this year include 'Sky Rocket,' green & white variegated, and 'Fireworks,' a dark pink variety. All grow around 2' tall, have beautiful plumes in summer, and can be used as a height accent in containers or flowerbeds. |
