Spring Potting Bench
Greetings!

Spring has arrived and everyone at Collier's Nursery is excited to help you discover and learn about plants and plan and create your garden this season!  The average last frost in our area is March 23 so we are likely safe from cold weather.  We are bursting at the seams with blooms and look forward to seeing you this April!

Happy Gardening!
April Checklist

Fertilize Zoysia, Bermuda and St. Augustine lawns with Fertilome All Seasons with Barricade, which contains pre-emergent and a dose of nitrogen.

Got weeds?  Spray visible weeds in Zoysia and Bermuda lawns with Fertilome Weed-Out Plus.  This product is best used when temperatures are between 65 and 85 degrees.  For visible weeds in Centipede or St. Augustine use Hi-Yield Atrazine

Prune late-winter and early-spring blooming shrubs after they bloom.

Feed the masses!  Now is a great time to fertilize the plants in your landscape.  For most trees, shrubs, groundcovers, vines and perennials we recommend Hi-Yield Grower's Special.  For roses and flowers that are susceptible to attack by insects and diseases use Bayer All-In-One Rose and Flower Care, which includes systemic insecticide and fungicide as well as fertilizer.  For annuals and perennials we recommend Osmocote, a time-released fertilizer that lasts about 3 months.  You can supplement with Fertilome Blooming and Rooting for more profuse blooms and stronger root systems.  Going green?  Use Espoma Plant-tone, an organic fertilizer, for all your flowers, herbs and veggies.
Perennial Perfection
Our Favorite Garden Perennials

Spring is a wonderful time to plan and plant a perennial garden and we carry our largest selection of perennials this time of the year.  Perennials return each year and generally bloom 3 to 6 weeks at a time.  The following lists include some of our favorite garden perennials, chosen for their durability, dependability and many for their profuse blooms.  When selecting perennials for your garden choose plants that bloom at different times of the year for color that extends throughout the season.  Trim dead flowers from your perennials and enjoy a fresh flush of blooms!  Most perennials thrive when divided every 3 to 4 years.  We carry many more perennials than are listed here so stop by and discover these and other favorites!

Heirloom Tomato Varieties

Delectable delights passed down through generations and prized for their unusual colors and most importantly their delicious fruit, heirloom tomatoes have made a come back!  If you have never grown heirloom tomatoes this is a great year to try.  Like all tomatoes, heirlooms thrive in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, so pile in the organic compost and manure!  Grow tomatoes in full sun in containers or in the ground.  Allow about 3 square feet for each plant and stake as needed.  Mulch the soil around your tomatoes to keep their roots cool and moist and avoid splashing water on their leaves.  Fertilize with Espoma Plant-tone organic fertilizer.  Expect to harvest fruit 60-75 days after transplants are set out.  Be sure to plant enough to share these summer treasures with family, friends and neighbors!
