What's in Stock for November
It's easy for pansies and violas to steal the show with their abundant blooms but we have many other great plants in stock for winter! Elegant evergreens are here as well as gorgeous camellias in bloom. Evergreen perennials and ferns such as heuchera, hellebore, ornamental grass, autumn, holly and tassle ferns are great additions to the winter garden. Ornamental cabbage and kale are blushing with winter color and evergreen herbs such as rosemary, lavender, parsley, thyme, oregano and sage are aromatic despite the chill. And don't forget tasty winter vegetables like spinach, broccoli and lettuce, just to name a few! The days might be chilly but our plant selection is as diverse and interesting as on any warm spring day. Come browse around and discover cold-loving plants that you might otherwise miss out on!
Beautiful Bulbs
Daffodil, hyacinth, paperwhite and tulip bulbs arrive in early November. Plant spring-blooming bulbs in your garden after Thanksgiving. Many of our customers enjoy forcing bulbs for the holidays and paperwhites are the easiest and most popular to force. To force paperwhites, cover about 2/3 of the bulb with potting soil or pebbles. Place in a cool, shady place until shoots are 4-6" tall then move to a cool, sunny spot. Allow atleast 4 weeks for blooms to appear. Store unplanted bulbs in a brown paper bag in the refrigerator, basement or garage and make sure they stay dry. |
There's rosemary, that's for remembrance.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is native to the Mediterranean region. The name Rosmarinus is derived from old Latin, meaning "dew of the sea," which refers to rosemary's pale blue flowers and the fact that it is often grown near the sea. Traditionally, rosemary symbolizes remembrance. Rosemary is an outstanding evergreen herb that tolerates winter cold as well as summer heat and drought. Pale blue blooms appear in late winter and aromatic foliage can be used in the kitchen year-round. Plant rosemary in part to full sun in containers or in the ground. Rosemary is wonderfully easy to grow; be sure to plant in well-drained soil with lots of sun, don't over water and enjoy lovely rosemary plants all year long! |
Exciting Shipments
Rosemary topiaries have arrived! Rosemary topiaries are elegant for holiday decorating, are absolutely adorable in containers and make wonderful holiday gifts!
Christmas greenery will arrive the week of Thanksgiving. Come by and stock up on wreaths and garland to deck your halls for the holidays. The smell of fresh greenery throughout your home is sure to fill you with Christmas cheer! |
November Garden Checklist
November is still an excellent time to tackle landscaping projects. Planting trees and shrubs now is easier on the plants and you. Planting during dormancy allows roots to get established before hot, dry weather sets in, which lessens stress on the plant and means less watering for you to do.
The average first frost is November 8th.
Cut perennials back after they have been killed to the ground by a frost or freeze. If needed, dig up, divide or transplant perennials now.
Prune trees and shrubs that need it after Thanksgiving, once they are dormant.
