Mum's The Word
Classic Fall Color with Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemum x morifolium 'Bonnie'
The common florist mum (Chrysanthemum x morifolium) is a member of the Asteraceae, or daisy, family. Close kin include marguerite, ox-eye and shasta daisies.
Chrysanthemum species is one of the oldest cultivated plants in existence, traceable to China, 500 B.C.  Chrysanthemum blooms are triggered by lengthening nights which makes their arrival a sure sign that autumn is on its way. Mums prefer to be placed in sun to part shade in well-drained soil. They are perennial if planted in the ground; cut back to the ground after the plant is killed by a frost and it will return next year. Choose blooms in shades of red, orange, yellow, purple, pink and white and create an autumn display in your landscape by pairing with pumpkins, gourds and other fall blooms!

Unexpected Fall Color
Fall Blooms Mums and pansies are what first come to mind when most of us think of fall blooms but there are many other options to enliven your autumn landscape. September welcomes the arrival of cool-weather lovers such as snapdragons, petunias, marigolds and cosmos; add these heavy-bloomers into your mum plantings for extra bursts of color. Try pairing mums and croton on a porch or patio; croton's striking red, orange and yellow foliage makes a fiery backdrop for warm-colored mums. For shadier spots mix in autumn fern for soft green and bronze tones. When planning your autumn containers and flowerbeds be sure and take a few minutes to search out unusual and unexpected sources of fall color!

Fall is for Planting!

Did you know that fall is the best time to plant trees, shrubs, vines, groundcovers and many perennials? Most perennials, including trees and shrubs, go dormant, or take a rest from producing new growth, during the fall and winter. Planting during dormancy allows the plant to focus its energy on producing strong, healthy roots while not producing foliar growth, blooms, or trying to survive heat and drought. This makes the next few months ideal for planning and installing a new landscape. Bring in photos or sketches of your landscape and we will be happy to offer ideas and advice if you need help getting started.
Fall Lawncare

It's early September and time to apply Fertilome Lawn Food Plus Crabgrass and Weed Preventer (red and yellow bag) to zoysia, bermuda and saint augustine lawns. The active ingredient in this application, prodiamine, is a pre-emergent that lasts for 6-8 weeks and is effective against un-germinated weed seeds.
Thank you for reading! If you have questions about your autumn landscape projects please call or stop in and we'll be delighted to help answer them and offer advice.
