President's Message

"Special Edition"
Welcome to this special edition of the NAWBO Delaware Newsletter! It is special because we wanted to share all the good things emanating from our recent "Women Mean Business® Summit" featuring acclaimed speaker, author and consultant, Mary Cantando.
The morning kicked off early for a few lucky attendees who won a "backstage pass" to have breakfast with Mary Cantando. Each attendee brought a business issue they were facing and Mary offered a solution on the spot. Here's what one person had to say:
"Thank you for spending the time with me at the Backstage Breakfast and after the meeting. I appreciated your honesty with all of us. You were there to teach and inspire - and you did just that." - Carol Warner
We then listened in as Mary led a panel discussion with three local businesswomen who have built multi-million dollar businesses. Beverly Stewart (Back To Basics Learning Dynamics), Patricia Troy-Brooks (Advanced Staffing) and Ellen Barrosse (Synchrogenix Information Strategies) shared stories of dreams, adversity, triumphs and fears that had us all riveted by what they had to say.
(L to R: Mary Cantando, Beverly Stewart, Patricia Troy-Brooks, Ellen Barrosse)
Mary then took us through a workshop, "Describe What You Sell So They Will WANT to BUY!" Several attendees volunteered to be on stage with Mary and received help on developing their "WOW Statements!"
Finally there was time to catch our breaths, network and visit our fantastic exhibitors.
(Jodi Frank with Mary Cantando)
Mary delivered a powerful luncheon keynote, "Busting Excuses: What's Stopping You From The Business of Your Dreams?"
After lunch, attendees had a choice of sponsor workshops to attend. Thanks to Charlie Gillean (AstraZeneca) for his workshop, "Getting Your Foot in the Door with Large Corporations" and Cathy Imburgia (Creative Communications) for her workshop, "Branding Your Status: Using Your Certification as an Advantage".
Mary closed out the program with her "20 Ideas in 20 Minutes". She took the best tips from her "2010 Woman's Advantage Calendar". These are tips she receives from women entrepreneurs around the world. The best 365 make the calendar. An example is February, 21 - "You can't change yesterday, but you can ruin today worrying about tomorrow."
All in all, it was a tremendous day. In all the years I've been working and in the years since I've had my own "shop," I have never been to a program like this one ... practical tools to take away and use. Each and every one of us implemented one or more Key Learnings since leaving.
Based on post-event survey feedback, 90% of respondents thoroughly enjoyed the day! Here are just a few of the many comments we received from attendees:
"I have been networking and going to these types of events for several years now, and I whole heartedly feel that this was the best event that I have EVER attended."
"The entire event was one of the best women's events I've ever attended. It was balanced in content, connection and networking."
"I came away with vital information and new networking relationships. I'm joining NAWBO!"
"Kept my interest the entire day. It seemed like it was over too soon."
"I thought the information was great. I took a ton of notes and left there with ideas to implement."
"20 Ideas in 20 Minutes was the best close of a conference I have ever seen -- it's already typed and hanging in my office."

If you want to see or relive memories from the Women Mean Business Summit, click here. (User ID: nawbo, Password: success.) Special thanks to our photographer, Theresa Knox. She was all over the place during the event capturing images and memories. She had more energy than most in the room despite her being "72 years young". You go girl!
Soon we will be posting video highlights and testimonials on our website, www.nawbodelaware.org. Special thanks go out to our videographers, Yvonne and Darin Norwood of Lifetime Video Services.
If you want to pick up more of Mary Cantando's wisdom, check out her books and audio cd's at her website www.womansadvantage.biz. We still have some 2010 Woman's Advantage Calendars for sale. If interested, contact Caren McCabe.

On the local scene, Cathy has been a member of NAWBO since shortly after the Delaware Chapter was formed. Over the past 10 years, she has served on NAWBO national committees; is a past president of our chapter (2005-2007); served various board roles leading up to the presidency; and is currently Director of Public Policy, advocating on behalf of women business owners ... an admitted passion and why she agreed to rejoin the board after a year sabbatical.
Cathy has held the position as President of Creative Communications since establishing the full-service communications firm in 1993. Creative Communications is an award-winning certified Women Business Enterprise (WBE) licensed and incorporated in the State of Delaware and a federal-certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE). Recently, Cathy expanded her business to the Albuquerque, New Mexico vicinity where she also enjoys the benefits of NAWBO membership with the Northern New Mexico Chapter attending meetings and linking up with members/potential business partners on each visit.
Cathy's entrepreneurial spirit, her strong support for women in business, and her community involvement are the cornerstones that have made her a successful business owner. In recognition of her efforts in addressing the issues challenging women-owned businesses, Cathy received the SBA Delaware 2007 Women in Business Champion Award. In acknowledgement of her entrepreneurial accomplishments, Cathy was awarded the 2000 and 2007 Delaware State Chamber of Commerce Superstar in Business Award of Excellence. While she spends nearly one-third of her time in New Mexico these days, Cathy calls Delaware her home. She resides in Claymont with her husband of 26 years, John, and their three children Katrina (22), Christine (17), and Joey (15). She noted that whether here in Delaware or in New Mexico, there is never a dull moment. Somehow she always manages to meet her family, business, and volunteer commitments no matter where she is.

Non-Profit Spotlight
by Devona Williams
Delaware Adolescent Program, Inc. (DAPI) is a non-profit educational choice for pregnant teens throughout Delaware. Now in its 41st year of operation, DAPI serves teens from ages 12-19. These girls are largely minority and low income with a host of additional challenges including academic, domestic, health and foster care. They are highly at risk of dropping out of school. DAPI's mission is to ensure graduation, healthy pregnancies and the tools for success as both citizens and parents.
DAPI seeks committed and caring board members to govern and serve as resources to the DAPI mission statewide. In particular, there is a current need for Human Resource Specialists, Facilities Experts and Educators. There are also committee openings for special events and marketing. Currently the DAPI board is comprised of 18 individuals with an additional advisory and honorary board to support their efforts. With a 1.2 million dollar budget and a staff of 30, DAPI is well positioned to make an impact on a highly vulnerable population. For more information, please visit www.dapi.org or email lodonnel@dapi.org.
