GUAVA Senior Home & Healthcare Franchise

Guava LogoIf there's one business that grows regardless of economic trends, it's healthcare. When you add in low startup fees and a carefully structured growth program, you get GUAVA Senior Home and Healthcare Services, Inc. Mary Schreiber, founder of the Hockessin, Delaware, company says franchisees can start working from home providing non-medical services and transition into an office providing complete home medical staffing.

Arline BrexHer Building Block Healthcare System is designed to take franchisees step-by-step through just such a process. "We have a strong leadership marketing technology and training component that also adds value," Schreiber adds.

GUAVA is a brand-new franchiser, with two locations in place so far. Schreiber has assembled a development team that envisions five units by the end of 2009, and 25 by the end of 2010. Schreiber bases her prediction on GUAVA's special business model, plus the power of demographics.

"I see healthcare as one of the largest growth industries with more than 12 million Americans requiring some long-term care," she says. "As many as six out of every ten Americans have family members or friends requiring long-term care services and eight out of every ten would prefer to have care provided at their family member's home," Schreiber adds.

Doing Business with the Government - It's Not as Hard as You Think!

We came together on a cool, rainy October morning to hear from Jay Burks, Office of Minority and Women Business Enterprise, and Gedell Hawkins, US Small Business Administration. Jay and Gedell addressed "Common Myths & Misconceptions of Doing Business With The Government." If you think it's too difficult to become a certified woman-owned business, or you think it's expensive, or if you're a one-woman show and you think you're too small, you're bypassing potential business with the government. Check out http://omwbe.delaware.gov, your one stop for information. The US Small Business Administration's web site http://www.sba.gov is your small business resource.

Small Business Caucus Eager to Get Input from Business Owners

by Cathy Imburgia

Over the past few weeks, the Small Business Caucus held meetings so that small business owners could share the business challenges they face with lawmakers up and down the state. State Rep. Dan Short (R-Seaford) and State Rep. Bryon Short (D-Highland Woods), both of whom are small businessmen, formed the Small Business Caucus to unite members of the General Assembly that share a common concern about the welfare of small businesses in the First State.

As noted by the representatives in attendance at the New Castle County meeting, today small business does have a voice in Dover. With this new focus by Delaware legislators, we need to take advantage of this opportunity and make our concerns known to the Caucus, in particular, where legislation gets in the way of doing business.

If you were unable to attend the meetings but would like to voice your concerns, contact Cathy Imburgia, NAWBO Delaware Public Policy Chair, at (302) 791-0765 or cathy@mycreativecommunications.com or Rep. Bryon Short via Blaine Breeding at (302) 577-8480 or blaine.breeding@state.de.us and reference the Small Business Caucus statewide meetings with business owners.
