Message from the President of NAWBO Delaware Devona E. G. Williams, Ph.D
To Your Future Success Do you remember when you got your first business idea?
Do you remember that "Aha" moment? The moment that let you know that you could have a business, run a business or be in business? Think back to the moment and take a few minutes to capture the feelings that you had at the time. Now write it down. That is the spirit of the entrepreneur and innovative optimism. Exhilarating, yes? It's now time to get in touch with the entrepreneurial you and the innovator within. Innovation is simply a new way to apply an existing idea. Here are a few simple steps:
- What ideas do you currently have on "the back burner" that if executed now could lead to a future business opportunities, increased revenues?
- Grab hold of old ideas that you have and take a moment to retool them. Bring in a partner or employee and brainstorm for a moment. Take one or two ideas and ask what can you do with the idea to make it work? Are there strategies that can be applied at relatively low cost? How can you use existing resources to make these ideas work?
- With what you are currently doing, can you change some aspect of the way you provide a service or product that would give you different results?
So when most people are growing weary and pessimistic with what might seem a bleak economic future, remember as business people you have the entrepreneurial spirit within you. Stay optimistic. Focus on the future. Strengthen the structure of your business. Most importantly innovate - your successful future depends on it.
In the spirit of generating new ideas that you can use, I invite you to participate in our upcoming events. On November 20th, you'll hear Barbara Kosoff of Women Impacting Public Policy talk with us about the transitioning of our national political leadership and what that means to your business. Our annual educational event on January 15, Rising to New Heights will offer workshops to raise the level of all that you do. Hope to see you there!

Business Gifts
The $25 Rule
OK, maybe it is better to give than to receive. But when it comes to taxes, it's definitely better to give business gifts than personal gifts.
Here's why: Business gifts can be deducted against your taxable income. And in some cases, what might be thought of as a gift might even be an ordinary - and fully deductible - business expense. More on that below.
The $25 rule The first thing to remember about business gifts is the $25 rule: You can deduct up to $25 in business gifts to any one taxpayer per year. That means if you give a $45 business gift to someone, your deduction is limited to $25. If you make gifts of two items worth $10 and $15 during the year to one person, you get to deduct $25.

"Good Results" From Being A NAWBO Member!
In response to a media request I submitted a brief blurb about my financial planning practice and was contacted by a writer for the New York Times. The interview was published in the Sunday edition of the New York Times on February 24, 2008 and can still be read today at Offering Financial Calm Amid the Storm of Divorce. Even now, many months later, I am being contacted by prospects and other professionals who have read that feature story and want to do business with me.
