As you know I have had much to be grateful for over the past year. But did you know being grateful also makes me happier. According to research by Robert A. Emmons at the University of California-Davis, grateful people are happy people. Emmons' nine years of research indicates that grateful people are less bothered by minor illness, experience less stress and take better care of their health. It's true that we all have obstacles to gratitude. The demands of everyday life and a desire not to be dependent on others are two of the biggest. But those who make a conscious effort to show gratitude report higher levels of positive emotions and lower levels of depression. So take some time today to stop for a minute and think about what you are grateful for. Your health will thank you.

Summary of - "An Introduction to the Enneagram" - with Martie McMane.
 Window to the Soul

At our last Soul Food luncheon, Martie McMane talked about the enneagram. The enneagram is an ancient tool of self-understanding which can help you identify and change patterns of behavior so you can open wider to different responses instead of getting stuck always reacting the same way. As you understand why you react the way you do, you can ask your "inner observer" to inform you when you are falling into old patterns and help you change your response. According to the enneagram there are three kinds of knowledge or centers:
  1. Thinking - the thinker asks such questions as Am I capable? What is the situation? How does it all fit together? What do I do? How do I respond?
  2. Doing - the doers asks Am I important? Am I safe here? Who is the strongest here? What am I suppose to do about this?
  3. Feeling - the feeling person asks Am I loved? Do others like me? Am I making a good impression? What do others need from me?

We all have one dominant center, but we are influenced by the centers around us. The key is to understand your dominant center and react from its strengths, not weaknesses.

Martie is offering an in-depth workshop on November 2 from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm continued on November 3 from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. The cost is $100.00 and includes lunch. If you would like to attend, please contact Martie at 303-442-1787 ext 1 or martie@firstcong.net

 Creating a nature journal

Join local author Susie Mottashed as she speaks on the topic of her book "Who Lives in Your Backyard? Creating a journal that opens your eyes and heart to nature's nearby wonders."

November 15 - "Are You Leading a Slimtastic Life?" with Keri Silk
 Find the Skinny in You

Like Dorothy in the Wizard of OZ, you've had the power all along. You just didn't believe it. In this interactive workshop we'll touch on the five core strategies; Vision, Nutrition, Movement, Community and Spirit. You'll discover some new techniques for making weight loss fun and almost effortless. So be ready to click your heels together and say "I am skinny, happy and healthy"!

"Wow! You look great!" Today this is a common compliment for Keri Silk, Founder and President of Slimtastic and the International Association of Weight Loss Coaches (IAWLC). But in 2005 she was tipping the scales at over 250 pounds and squeezing into a size 22. Keri realized she needed something new, not the same old diet and patterns. She discovered new ideas and new ways of thinking. She put these together with what she already knew about herself and Slimtastic was created. Slimtastic is a new program that looks at five core elements in a person's life. Today, Keri is an energetic size 12. She shares her approach with individual clients and speaks to groups about weight loss. Keri is still loosing weight and the compliments continue to pour in.
