It's hard to believe summer is over! School has started and I am officially the mother of a middle- school girl. Time goes so quickly. I enjoyed the summer despite having a cast on my arm. My arm is totally healed and I am getting back to work. I have much to share with you.

In July, I spent a week at Contemplative Camp; enjoying silence, walking the labyrinth, sharing and relaxing. The book we read and discussed was My Grandfather's Blessings by Rachel Naomi Remen. This book is full of wisdom and I was very blessed reading it. If you need encouragement, this book is for you.

How are you coming along on your goals? Are some accomplished? Are you stuck? Have you changed some goals? Have you made some new goals? I can answer yes to all these questions. If you remembered I shared a goal to lose one pound a week. Well, right now I have lost 20 pounds and I'm stuck. This is not where I had hoped to be, but 20 pounds is a lot. I look better, feel better and my clothes are more comfortable. Remember to look at what you have accomplished. I am not giving up, but I am looking a what I can change to help me reach my goal. I looked at some habits that needed to be modified, then made the appropriate changes.

The goal that I have accomplished is establishing a private practice in Louisville, opening September 4. To accomplish this goal, I wrote a business plan, found office space, and have worked on all the details from furniture to business cards. More on my practice at the end of this newsletter.

My new goal is reaching the top of Pike's Peak in the Pike's Peak Challenge. This event is a fund-raiser for the Traumatic Brain Injury Trust Fund of Colorado. As some of you know, on August 1 of last year, my husband sustain a serious brain injury when he took a "header" off his bike on South Boulder Road. I am very grateful that he has fully recovered, but many others do not. I have been hiking since my cast came off and my goal is to "bag" my first 14er. But here is the problem; I have become obsessed with this goal. Sometimes a goal can be so important that it's easy to make it all or nothing. I was very discouraged after hiking Mount Audubon yesterday. Then my husband gave me a piece of climbing wisdom, which I think can apply to all goals. In his book No Shortcuts To The Top, world renowned mountaineer Ed Viesturs shares his motto "Reaching the summit is optional. Getting down is mandatory". What good is reaching a goal, if you can't "get down"? A goal should be important, challenging and fun. But if it cost too much personally, either emotionally or physically, maybe the goal needs to be changed.

So what I am going to do about Pike's Peak? I am going to continue to hike and come September 8, I will do my best to get to the summit, but it's optional. What's mandatory is to have fun, be safe and to "get down".

I am excited to start Soul Food luncheons again! I have all the dates set and some of speakers lined up. Keep checking for updates.

September 6 - "Babies, Baboons and Bones" with Jane Stanfield.
International volunteering for fun and focus.

Jane Stanfield was inspired to develop, and fortunate to have the opportunity to create, the amazing adventure of traveling around the world as a volunteer. She will share her international travel odyssey, present the local resources she used to plan her trip, and reveal tips and information that will help make your next international trip safe and effortless.

Jane Stanfield has been an active volunteer at the local and national levels. Last year, however, she felt it was time to take her volunteering efforts to a new level, so she went international. She works primarily in the non-profit sector and spends her spare time performing at the Arvada Center and with community theatres.
