I have enjoyed the last few warm days; opening the
windows, wearing shorts and picking spring flowers to
grace my table. Seasons are such a lesson about life
and each year I learn that lesson again.
My
husband is a gardener and loves to plant new things.
For Mother's Day, some of you may get a romantic
dinner or a day at the spa. I get a plant. And not just a
small plant; I've gotten lilac bushes, a blue spruce, an
Autumn Blaze Maple and last year a flowering
crabapple tree. And they truly are wonderful gifts, not
just because they last a long time, but because they
teach us about life.
Have you ever noticed
that, after you plant a tree or bush, it seems nothing is
happening. Depending on the size of the plant, you
might wait for a few years before seeing any evidence
of growth. That's because the plant is putting all it's
effort into establishing and developing roots. Once it
has a firm foundation and the roots have branched out
and taken hold, the plant begins to "grow". At least
that's how we humans see it. But in fact it has been
growing all along, we just didn't realize it.
And
we are just like plants. Before anyone sees any
growth or change on the outside, there is a
tremendous amount of work being done on the
inside. We also must have strong roots to grow. We
need a foundation of love, faith, and security to grow.
Then, we too, can send our branches to the sky and
bless those around us. Remember to nurture yourself
like you would a plant. I wonder what plant I will get
this year?
Summer is almost upon us! My
daughter is leaving elementary school and is on the
verge of being in middle school. I will be enjoying the
summer with her and my husband. As some of you
know, he was in a near fatal bicycle accident on
August 1 of last year. I am happy to say that he has
recovered and is back riding again. I understand his
passion. To ask him never to ride a bike again would
be like asking me never to sing again. It's not going to
happen. All that said, I am taking some time this
summer to slow down. I will schedule at least one
Soul Fool luncheon in June, on the 14th. And there
will be a Soul Food on August 9th and 23rd. I hope
to have the schedule of dates finalized by the next
newsletter. So, stay tuned for more details!

Summary of "What Kids REALLY Want to Ask" with Margaret Pevec.
Keep Communicating
Wow! Our last Soul Food luncheon was for ME!
Margaret Pevec spoke with us about how to
communicate with our children. We enjoyed a
wonderful roundtable discussion about talking with
our preteens. As moms, we all wanted to
communicate more effectively than our moms did with
us. And, I think, as moms we are.
Margaret
shared her research with us. When more than 1100
10-14 year olds were asked what they really wanted to
ask parents, kids asked only 450 basic questions.
And those questions fell into two categories;
questions about the family and questions about the
outside world. Then Margaret and her graduate
advisor, Rhonda Richardson, found movies that would
facilitate a discussion. In their book, the movies are
listed as well as questions and cautions.
I
brought the book home and discussed it with my
husband. Those of us who are moms know that other
ears are always listen. Later that evening, my
daughter decided the book was more interesting than
going to bed (any surprise there?) She read all of the
450 questions at the end of the book, read about the
movies, and then told me which ones she wanted to
watch! If I had any doubts about our family movie
nights, I don't anymore. And all you need is the book
and your Blockbuster card.
This book is a
winner for families with preteens. If you would like to
find out more or get a copy of the book, contact
Margaret Pevec at Margaret@ margaretpevec.com or

May 17 - "Awakening Compassionate Awareness Through the Practice of Projective Dreamwork" with Billie Ortiz
Sweet Dreams
Every night our dreams come to guide us toward our
highest potential. So often, though, we forget our
dreams or don't see the point in recording them. Join
certified dreamworker, Billie Ortiz, and learn the basics
of group projective dreamwork, discuss common
dream symbols and hints on how to remember your
dreams. Learn how recognizing that "all dreams
come in the service of health and wholeness" and
agreeing to phrase our comments as "If this were my
dream," encourages deeper insight into the dream
material and allows for all participants to enter the
dream as though it were their dream as well. Once
the dream becomes "everybody's dream" we begin to
realize how we all share a universal bond in our
collective unconscious through the language of
metaphor and symbols and enter into a state of
compassionate awareness of our common shared
humanity. Bring your dream journal, dream art or just
your curiosity and learn about the endlessly
fascinating and infinitely rewarding world of dreams!
Billie Ortiz is a certified dreamworker
who, since 1997, has helped scores of dreamers on
the path to self-discovery through a better
understanding of their dreams. She offers private
sessions, groups, workshops and bi-annual weekend
retreats featuring dream book author Jeremy Taylor.
