Leadership Lessons from Cycling

As a novice bicyclist (trying to catch up to Sandy's back wheel), I've been reflecting. Check out these three leadership lessons:
1. On a good ride, expect to suffer.
The biggest surprise to me in cycling was how painful it is (and I'm not just talking about sitting on a hard, narrow seat!). Hardcore  cyclists share stories of long rides up steep hills into a headwind with a twinkle in their eye. A popular cycling event is labeled Death Ride - seriously! I imagined cycling to be more along the lines of a breezy Sunday jaunt with a picnic basket in tow. But in order to reach the mountaintop, to see impressive vistas, and to experience a thrilling downhill ride, you have to grind out prolonged climbs.
Spiritual leaders similarly can expect hardship, seasons of grinding it out - even when working in their areas of strength and gifting! While there is joy in serving Jesus, there is also a level of strain. This is validated by every biblical leader.
2. The rules do apply.

Below are some "starter" requests. If you'd like a request added to the Prayer Day list, please send them to Sandy by Thursday, the 8th.  Two church planting couples, Tito and Day Day Dizon (photo left) and Bernard and Kimberly Emerson (photo right), excelled in the Converge Church Planting Assessment Center in August! Pray as the Dizons serve in Folsom and as the Emersons prepare to mobilize (possibly) in Stockton. Pastor Jän van Oosten of NewCov in Fresno is courageously going through his second series of chemo treatments.
Pastor Douglas and Noel Estes of Berryessa Valley Church are relocating to Ireland for a sabbatical where Douglas will author a book on the Apostle Paul defending the truth and historicity of the Bible. Also pray for Associate Pastor Harry Rodgers and his wife Michele, as they help lead the ministry while the Estes are away.
Dr. Andy Acquistapace (retired from ministries in Oakland and Alameda) is progressing nicely in a Fairfield rehab center after having a stroke.
Pray that CPW will Delight God by starting and strengthening churches that transform lives and communities here, near, and far away.
Pastor Kelly Patchin is recovering from pancreatitis and grieving the recent loss of his father.
Associate Pastor Rick Fox of First Baptist in Dinuba continues his cancer journey.
Lillie Gonzalez, Church Planting Assistant with CPW, is grieving the loss of her mother-in-law and is anticipating back surgery later this moth. Edna Erickson, wife of Roger Erickson -- long time CPW Board Member -- and members of Fair Oaks of Concord, continues to battle cancer.

Grace Baptist Church, Santa Maria, is calling a new Senior Pastor, Benji Magness, to lead their congregation beginning October 2. Pastor Benji is coming from Country Bible Church in Kaufman, TX and is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary, with a Th.M. in Old Testament studies. He and his wife Heather have 4 children and are expecting their 5th in January.
Thanks to Dr. Mark Platt, the Search Team, and the Elders of GBC for their strong leadership over the last year!
