| Change in plans?! |
How do you manage when life plans are drastically altered? I love to make plans and even revise and improve plans, but I can become perturbed when my plans are significantly changed by unexpected circumstances or by others. (Just being honest here!) I suppose that's why I appreciate Joseph in the Christmas story. He doesn't get much ink in the overall account, but he does get my admiration! Joseph's ability to adapt to and then adopt (quite literally!) the change in plans is remarkable! In a matter of weeks Joseph goes from a swooning lover, to a bitterly betrayed fiance, to a startled angelic witness, to a sacrificial and selfless supporter of his new wife and stepson. This was not his plan! (If you have time, re-read Matthew 1:18-25 and listen to a Joseph-oriented Christmas song.) But it's helpful and marvelous to see those who are wise and are willing to accept God's plan for their lives, even when they conflict with -- or even crush -- their personal plans! I've seen many of you living out the Joseph-scenario recently: pastors adapting, church leaders adjusting, staff members shifting their sights, congregations re-thinking their focus... all because God's plan requires some changes on our part. It may perturb us at times, but I guess it makes sense that our plans must be open to change when the living God chooses to live and lead among us!
