HEADQUARTERS DOCTRINE
Thrust, Hook, Lunge, Pump
Four simple words, yet they constitute every hand, stick and knife attack (bullets thrust - not to many hooking bullets around just yet, just some heat-seeking missiles). In trying to create a training doctrine as comprehensive as possible, back in the 1990s, I freed myself from all existing fighting systems and their mindsets and started chiseling away at the "strikes of the world." How are they the same? How are they different?
First the hand strikes! I learned that the punches hook or thrust, in a power lunge or a jabbing pumping motion. Interesting. Next, I looked at all the kicks. I found the same. Thrust kicks or hook kicks that either power in fully or hit and retract. More interesting. Then on to the knife attacks. Stabs either hook or thrust. Slashes usually hook in. Same again. Then stick or impact weapon attacks. Since the impact weapon strikes with the tip, the shaft and the handle, the strikes must thrust or hook. Lunge or pump. I discovered that they all shared the same deliveries. The strikes all thrust or hook in, via a committed lunge or a pumping hit and retract. Know thy enemy. Plan to fight thy enemy.
1) Thurst: Any straight line attacks.
2) Hook: Any non-straight-line attacks
3) Lunge: Any powerful attack with a significant body commitment. It tends to stay out there "and linger" longer, since it was delivered with greater force and body synergy.
4) Pump: This is "hit and retract" right away. It does not linger. Snaps in and out with body better balanced.

In order to come to these conclusions, you have to be free to see the big, martial picture. You see, some systems are not so free. Some systems never hook attack, believing that straight lines are the most efficient. Some systems never retract their punches, just deliver full body power lunges like the ever-debated "one-shot, one-kill style. In a short while, the fighters in these bereft systems innocently forget that these other attacks even exist. Take Japanese Aikido for one example. It really exists to fight against the power lunge attacks and can do very little against the balanced, jabbing, pumping attacks of say - a boxer.
It is the "Myth of the Duel" - spending too much time fighting the mirror image of yourself or your small system of techniques. Innocent mistake, but a serious one. The old kick boxer never fought on the ground. The wrestlers and Judokans never "kickboxed" on the ground. Some martial artists declare themselves, modern, ultimate fighting warriors "fearing no man," yet cannot load a pistol? From a self-defense standpoint, these are all doctrine problems, serious mistakes made back at the drawing boards, then made into bruises on the mats of training, and blood in the field. Your blood that is.
Thrusts, hooks via lunges and pumps. I might just add here, that understanding these four deliveries is vital when training to counter-attack a knife. I rarely see ANY knife systems cover these four bases, ignorantly thinking that two or even one solution, covers the subject. Your counter-knife program NEEDS to practice against these four deliveries AND against saber and reverse grips.
Once you indentify the problem? You can start identifying the solutions. Yes, the straight line really is the quickest way and straight punches are a favorite solution, unless of course you really suddenly need a good, hook punch? In which case I hope you have one. I demand that every practitioner have all these "bullets" in their guns, and learn to fight against all them, AS THE SYSTEM DOCTRINE!
How and where will these four deliveries come at you? The points of the common clock. The axis in the center, and then from the axis to high at 12, from the axis to the right and left sides, or the 3s and the 9s, and from the axis to below, the 6 o'clock point. But, the Combat Clock is chiseled, simple result of all the attack angles used everywhere by everyone, but this is the subject of yet another essay.
