Senate Committee Votes to Repeal Discriminatory `Defense of Marriage Act`

Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to repeal the 1996 so-called Defense of Marriage Act, advancing the Respect for Marriage Act (S. 598) in the U.S. Senate.

"Today's vote represents real progress toward a repudiation of the radically unfair, misnamed Defense of Marriage Act," said Evan Wolfson, founder and President of Freedom to Marry.  "We are one step closer to eliminating DOMA's gay exception, which unfairly withholds the federal protections and responsibilities of marriage from loving and committed same-sex couples who are legally married."

The Joint Commission Releases New Field Guide on LGBT Patient-Centered Care

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, today lauds The Joint Commission's release of a new field guide on LGBT patient-centered care. The guide, titled "Advancing Effective Communication, Cultural Competence, and Patient- and Family-Centered Care for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Community," urges U.S. hospitals to create a more welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for LGBT patients and their families. The Joint Commission is the nation's largest accrediting organization for healthcare facilities, responsible for accrediting and certifying more than 19,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States. The field guide is available for download at  www.jointcommission.org/lgbt.

Strong Majorities Favor Rights and Legal Protections for Transgender People

Overwhelming majorities of Americans, across the political and religious spectrum, believe that transgender people should have the same general rights and legal protections as other people, a new survey finds.

The August and September Religion and Politics Tracking Surveys were conducted by Public Religion Research Institute and released amid the increased attention towards transgender issues following Chaz Bono's appearance on ABC's Dancing with the Stars. The combined surveys constitute one of the first independent studies of attitudes on transgender issues and  Americans' knowledge of transgender identity.

NEW DATA FINDS SAME-SEX COUPLES PREFER MARRIAGE OVER OTHER LEGAL STATUSES

Over 140,000 same-sex couples have formalized their relationship under state law in the United States.  Nearly 50,000 same-sex couples have married.  These findings from a new Williams Institute study, Patterns of Relationship Recognition by Same-Sex Couples in the United States, are based on state administrative data from those states where same-sex couples can marry, enter civil unions or domestic partnerships, or enter other legal relationship statuses.  The study also finds that same-sex couples prefer marriage over other non-marital legal relationship statuses.
