In high school, most of us seem to be walking bundles of anxieties. I remember vividly when I graduated from high school I faced the twin fears of my emerging sexual orientation as well as the possible induction into the U.S. Army and worse, an unwelcome military tour in Vietnam. Both felt heavy burdens for any teenager.
Ironically, revealing my first truth would easily ensure my
ineligibility for the draft or for any military service at all. I felt lucky however that escaping the draft with a high lottery number, I avoided both immediate risks.
