LGBT Progress Measured on the Small Screen
By Mark Segal
After more than 40 years of what has become the "new gay movement" - a more aggressive style of gay activism after Stonewall - we can see the results, but what do you think has led to our success? It could be as simple as little Stewie on the animated TV show "Family Guy." Here's the skinny. Before 1969, our community was invisible. There was not one gay character, not one, not even a negative character, on network TV. The closest thing we had was Liberace who claimed to be non-gay, and Paul Lynd of "Hollywood Squares." Both were stereotypes and deeply in the closet.

New Survey: Acceptance of LGBT Equals Self-Esteem Groundbreaking Study Finds Family Acceptance of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Adolescents Protects Against Depression, Substance Abuse and Suicidal Behavior in Early Adulthood
For the first time, researchers have established a clear link between accepting family attitudes and behaviors towards their lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) children and significantly decreased risk and better overall health in adulthood. The study shows that specific parental and caregiver behaviors -- such as advocating for their children when they are mistreated because of their LGBT identity or supporting their gender expression -- protect against depression, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts in early adulthood. In addition, LGBT youth with highly accepting families have significantly higher levels of self-esteem and social support in young adulthood. The study is published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing, a journal of the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses, in a peer-reviewed article titled "Family Acceptance in Adolescence and the Health of LGBT Young Adults."

How the 2010 elections might (or might not) affect workplace equality
By Kevin Jones
As the country attempts to discern what the 2010 mid -term election results mean for our future, one thing seems fairly clear. Enacting federal legislation of specific importance to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community will be difficult, if not impossible, during the 112th Congress. It is possible that the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" will move forward by year end if it is not stripped from the National Defense Authorization Act. Other pieces of legislations- the Employment Non Discrimination Act (ENDA), the Tax Equity for Health Beneficiaries Act, the Family and Medical Leave Inclusion Act, the Domestic Partners Benefits and Obligations Act (DPBO), the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA), the Safe Schools Improvement Act, and the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), -- appear to have little realistic chance of passing by year end. The likelihood of these bills becoming law in the next two years appears equally unlikely. [i]
