Human Rights Campaign Releases `Buying for Equality` iPhone Application

Supporting Businesses That Support Us` Campaign Goes High-Tech this New Year; Equips Pro-Equality Shoppers with Rankings at their Fingertips

Continuing the effort launched at the beginning of the busy holiday shopping season, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, released a first of its kind, free iPhone application for its "Buying for Equality" guide.  This new technology will allow shoppers to access the Buying for Equality guide as they enter a store to see how hundreds of popular American brands are rated based on the businesses' treatment of their LGBT employees.  The iPhone application is available for download at www.hrc.org/iPhone.  Both Apple, and the iPhone's exclusive service provider, AT&T, score 100% on the 2010 Corporate Equality Index.

Longtime Connecticut Activist to Lead LGBT Union Group

Pride At Work, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) constituency group of organized labor, has selected longtime LGBT and labor activist Peggy Shorey to serve as the organization's new Executive Director.  Shorey, who has been an organizer and community leader in Connecticut for the past 17 years, succeeds Jeremy Bishop, who resigned earlier this year to join the Obama administration in the U.S. Department of Labor.  Shorey will begin her new responsibilities at Pride At Work's headquarters in Washington, D.C. in January.

Worldwide Gay Media and Press Professionals Connect

The gay media is able to interact, share news stories and find material for their publications.

Your local gay newspaper has never seen anything like it.  In the "good old" days, the gay newspapers job was to publish breaking news for the gay community.  In those days the mainstream media would not even touch a story in the GLBT community.  In this day and age, that has changed.  When you turn on the TV today it is hard not to find some type of media about the GLBT community.  This has made it hard for the gay newspapers.  Most gay newspapers are published weekly or monthly.  They are finding that the breaking news is being released by the mainstream media before they can get it out.  They find it more challenging to find stories and content for their publication.
2010 Census and the LGBT Community: What these changes mean for you

By Timothy P. Olson, Assistant Division Chief, Field Division, U.S. Census Bureau

Throughout our nation's history, the census has served to document and reflect our increasingly diverse and changing population. For the LGBT community, the first big change in the census occurred in 1980 when a "partner" category was added to the census questionnaire as a way to describe the relationship between two people in the household. However, until Census 2000, if two members of the same sex chose instead to describe themselves as spouses - a legal impossibility at the time - the gender of the second person was changed to the opposite sex. With Census 2000 this changed: the second same-sex spouse's relationship response was changed to the unmarried partner category.

Helsinki - Just Adorable

GayTravel.com provides a Gay-Friendly view of Helsinki, Finland

helsinkiThe capital of Finland, Helsinki is quaint, charming, clean and surprisingly "happening."  The public transportation since may be the best in the world and the people may be the kindest.  A center of global design, it seems everything new and funky comes here first.  From large boulevards to hidden winding lanes, sun-swept parks to deserted islands just a fifteen-minute ferry-ride away, Helsinki is the perfect city break destination, an excellent reintroduction to Europe following Russia or a brilliant addition to a Scandinavian adventure.  Eat reindeer and lingonberries, explore ancient island forts and simply relax at a sidewalk cafe in this northern city.
