We are working hard to provide youth of Pierce County with lots of  volunteer opportunities.  In this newsletter you will find information on upcoming projects with Youth United, various projects throughout the community and even some ongoing opportunities for your senior projects or internships.  Sorry it's long- but there is a lot of info for you! :)  Hope you are enjoying the start of your summers! - Bethany and Vanessa, YU STAFF

BEAUTIFY BONNEY LAKE
Help to Beautify Bonney Lake! On Saturday, July 17th, from 9 am until noon, Youth United will be cleaning up litter at the WSU Forest located at South Prarie Rd and 214th Ave, Bonney Lake, WA. Contact Vanessa at VanessaF@uwpc.org, if interested!

 
EDGEWOOD FISH FOOD BANK
Edgewood FISH Food Bank will be serving low-income individuals and families on Saturday, July 24th from 10am to 2pm.  We have 10 slots available to help at this project. Community Volunteer Opportunities
Looking for groups to assist in making seed sticks for the Pt. Defiance Zoo Budgie Buddies walk-in exhibit! Saturday, July 31st from 9:30 am-2:30 pm. Volunteers will create seed sticks that are sold to visitors for a chance to feed a budgie (parakeet). Groups will be making between 1,000 and 2,000 sticks during a 2-hour time period. The other half of the day will be spent doing horticultural and grounds work, along with some free-time in the zoo! :) 8 - 20 people needed!  E-mail Vanessa at VanessaF@uwpc.org, if interested!

Federal Way Triathalon:
JULY 11th! 300 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Begins at 5:30 am, helping with the race course.  Contact Jennifer Teeler at 253-835-2652, if interested.
 
 
Children's Museum of Tacoma:
*The following are Summer Day Camps throughout the month of Juthat will be held at the Children's Museum of Tacoma.  If you are interested in volunteering with any of these camps, please contact Jen McDonald at jmcdonald@childrensmuseumoftacoma.org or (253) 627-6031 ext. 231. 
  • A Pirate's Life for Me! (July 6-9 8:30 am - 2:30 pm)Ahoy Mateys!  Prepare to set sail on the high seas for a swashbuckling good time.  Practicing pirates will don pirate gear, map their journey and experiment with sea worthy crafts.
          *Young Explorers- July 6&7 8:30-12:30
  • Nĭ Hăo! - Chinese Explorations(July 12-16 8:30 am - 2:30 pm)Take an imaginary voyage to experience Chinese culture and learn basic Mandarin through songs, stories, art and games.
  • Hola!- Spanish Explorations (July 12 & 13 8:30 am - 12:30 pm)Take an imaginary voyage to experience the culture and language of several Spanish speaking countries through songs, stories, art and games.
  • Cooking:From the Garden to the Table (July 19-23 8:30am-2:30 pm)
    What yummy dishes can be made from things that grow in the garden?  We'll visit our very own Tacoma Farmer's Market and learn how fruits and veggies travel from the garden to our tables. *Young explorers- July 19&20 8:30-12:30 
  • Art FUNdamentals (July 26-30 8:30 am to 2:30 pm)
    Roll up your sleeves and get ready to explore colorful, messy, wacky and FUN methods for making art!  We'll sculpt, print, paint and collage our way to some fantastic
    masterpieces.

Pierce Conservation District Stream Team: 
 
Help Stream Team educate neighborhoos about how their everyday activities could be impacting our local water quality by participating in one of the many curb marking events being hosted this summer; two of which will be on Saturday, July 31st 9 am - 12 pm in Lakewood.  Directions will be sent upon registration.  Contact Vanessa at VanessaF@uwpc.org if interested in volunteering.  For more information regarding this organization, visit: http://www.piercecountycd.org/streamteam.html
 
Citizens for a Healthy Bay:

July 10th, 9:30-2:30 at Squally Beach doing invasive plant removal and fence repair, 3138 Marine View Dr.
June 19th, 9:30-2:30 at Yowkwala Beach doing invasive plant removal, 5618 MarineView Dr.
July 24th, 9:00-1:00, 3rd Annual Shoreline Clean Up Day: removing debris from the shoreline off Marine View Dr. including 3 restoration sites.  Groups will go on land and a special kayak team will go by water.  Must have own kayak/safety equipment.  To join the kayak team contact Jeff Barney at jbarney@healthybay.org.  Lunch provided.

Centro Latino: Assistance with flea market, every Sunday 10 am to 4 pm
Interested in practicing your spanish while helping those in need? Here's your chance! Contact Susan Ross at 253-572-7717 ext. 105. (No language experience required)
 
Emergency Food Network: Every Saturday 9 am-12 pm and 12 pm-3 pm
Join in the fight against hunger with the Repack Project! Puget Creek Restoration Society: 2nd Saturday of the month 9 am-noon, internships, adopt-a-stream, staffing booths at fairs, clerical help, etc.
Puget Creek Restoration Society protects, enhances, and restores the Puget Creek Watershed and other streams, wetlands, and green spaces. Tacoma Events Commission: Various Internships Available
The Tacoma Events Commission is a non-profit event production group with over 30 years of experience producing Tacoma's annual 4th of July Festival, Freedom Fair.  In addition to this beloved annual festival, the Tacoma Events Commission produced Tall Ships Tacoma in 2005, and has also introduced two new festivals in our community:  Gray Sky Blues Music Festival in April, and the Orting Pumpkin Fest in October.
