A Day On Instead of a Day Off

Students sort food as part of Martin Luther King volunteering

Many people can't wait for a holiday to approach. This year 160 students and adult mentors chose not to sleep in on the Martin Luther King holiday and traded their day off for a day of volunteering. The crew donated 505 hours to nine agencies throughout the county - sorting food, cleaning up local parks and creating dog toys.

As part of the event, adult mentors from Tacoma Community College joined the students and engaged them in discussions around the importance of service and the teachings of Dr. King. In the spirit of Dr. King, each student made a pledge from graduating ranging from college to building up others.

To see more about the pledges the students made, you can watch a video from the event on Youth United's on Facebook page.

Great Holiday Need Met with Generous Support

The economic climate made the holiday season a lean one for many. As the number of families seeking help this Christmas increased, miraculously, so did the number of people willing to help. United Way of Pierce County's Season of Caring program helped 2,099 individuals, nearly 700 more than 2008, have a wonderful holiday. Giving trees and sponsorships by 64 companies and 37 individuals and families brought in over $51,000 worth of gifts and food. State Farm Insurance made an additional donation of board games, providing 1,000 additional gifts.

Special thanks to all who participated in this event!

Suited for Success

Last Fall, United Way of Pierce County partnered with Men's Wearhouse for the annual Suit Drive. The community can donate gently-used suits to any local Men's Wearhouse.  In return, United Way of Pierce County redistributed the donations through our Gifts In Kind program.

In 2009, 281 complete suits were donated. In addition, 150 sport jackets, 162 slacks, 193 dress shirts and a collection of ties, belts, shoes, sweaters and overcoats were received.Even a few tuxedos were donated. In addition, Men's Wearhouse donated a new tie for each suit and threw in 500 additional ties to help the cause.  The total value of the Suit Drive donations was over $33,000.

The suits were redistributed to men re-entering the workforce or preparing for job interviews.

Special thanks to all who donated suits and to Men's Wearhouse for sponsoring this event.

The Many Faces of Loaned Executives

Breanne Coats, Business Examiner

United Way's Community Campaign seems like a simple process to those on the outside. A person visits businesses and asks for donations, and the money is distributed to direct-service nonprofits throughout the community. The end.

But that isn't the end, or even the beginning of the campaign's process, especially for those who joined the 2009 class of United Way of Pierce County's loaned executives.
