How Much Does It Cost?

As summer draws to a close, thousands of kids are preparing to head back to school. For families who are struggling to make ends meet, this time of year brings a great burden. So how much does it cost to send a child back to school with the needed supplies and a new outfit for the first day? See what we discovered when we sent four staff members out to shop for actual students in United Way of Pierce County's Back-to-School program. FULL STORY

Back-to-School is Cool!

United Way of Pierce County's Back-to-School program connects local businesses, churches, families, and individuals to disadvantaged children who need a little help to start the school year prepared to succeed. There are four ways you can get involved.

Sponsor a Child Signing up to sponsor a child gives you the opportunity to provide all the necessary school supplies, a back pack and a complete outfit for the first day of school.

Build a Back Pack By choosing to build a back pack, you can provide all the necessary school supplies in a back pack for a child.

Hold a Supply Drive Place a collection bin at your office, store or church to collect supplies like notebooks, glue, crayons and pencils. The donated items will be distributed to children in need through local Family Support Centers.

Make a Cash Donation Don't have time to shop? You can make a cash donation toward sponsoring a child, building a back pack or buying supplies.

United Way's Youth United Leadership Councils got in on the project too. The three branches of the Council fully sponsored a total of eight students, providing the full list of needed supplies and a first-day outfit! That's what it means to LIVE UNITED. Find out more about Youth United at www.uwpc.org.
