Help Kids in Need Get Prepared to Succeed! |
|
As summer winds down, kids are winding up for going back to school. But imagine what it must be like to be a child going back to school without the proper supplies? We want to help kids know that Back to School is Cool! Will you (and your company) join us in helping kids get prepared to succeed? Last year, our community raised $25,000 in donations - let's challenge ourselves to beat that goal.
There are four different ways to help: 1) Sponsor a child; 2) Build a backpack; 3) Hold a supply drive; 4) Make a cash donation
"One of the difficulties a child in poverty faces is starting a new school year feeling 'different' than their classmates. I hope you know what a difference you have made in a child's life." - 2008 Donation Recipient

Out-of-the-Box Campaign Kickoff Event Ideas
Many United Way company campaign kickoffs are just around the corner - is yours one of them? If so, are you looking for new and fresh ideas? Well, try these on for size:
1) Campaign Theme: Launch an overall theme at your kickoff such as the Olympics, carnival, the beach, Western, pirate (Talk Like a Pirate Day is Sept. 19 - arrrrr!).
2) Fantastic Food: Host a BBQ, pancake breakfast (such as the one at DaVita featured below), ice cream social, chili cook-off, luau, picnic, potluck or bake sale. Pick a color or food and shape a contest around it (all entries are red, made with chocolate. etc.). Award a prize for most creative application of the theme. Create a cookbook with everyone's recipes and photos from your event.
3) TV Game Show: Does someone you know have an inner Alex Trebek clamoring to get out? Have them host a Jeopardy-style game show focused on community issues. Or try the Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune or the Gong Show (fun and laughter guaranteed).
4) Tournament: Tap into your company's competitive spirit with a golf, putt-putt, soccer, softball, bowling, table tennis, tricycle, bicycle, running, or remote control car tournament.
5) Creative Contests: Cubicle decorating, baby photo guessing game, best office-supply-stuck-in-Jello, costume, etc.
6) So You Think You Can? Dance? Sing? Spin plates? Rally your company to host your own show and watch the talent come out of the woodwork. For those whose talent is the gift of gab, ask them to judge the performances!
Better yet, what are YOUR ideas? Please email them to monikas@uwpc.org and we'll feature them in an upcoming edition of The Spark! | | |

Meet UWPC's new Account Executives
UWPC's Community Education & Resource Development (CE&RD) team is very excited to welcome Account Executives Kathy Hobbs and Ray Smith!
Kathy Hobbs
After Kathy retired from her incredible 36-year career in the United States Navy just three short months ago, she and her husband Dave decided to make the Tacoma area their home. She held numerous leadership positions while on active duty, and worked on many United Way working groups/projects as a volunteer. She also served as a Loaned Executive and led many Combined Federal Workplace Campaigns. Stationed in Western Washington during the early part of her career, she stated she came back to this area because of the memories she had of "its beauty, and extremely friendly, outgoing and giving people."
Ray Smith
Ray is a familiar face in the halls of UWPC - he has been a Loaned Executive with us for the past four years. He also served as an LE for United Way of King County for a year, so he brings deep United Way knowledge to his new role. Prior to that, Ray spent 21 years in the Army, retiring in 1987, and then retired again after working at The Boeing Company as a security administrator and manager/investigator for civil rights. Ray graduated from Seattle University with a Bachelors of Education and also has a Masters of Art and Science from Pacific Lutheran University in Human Relations. He likes playing golf and racquetball, but says his skills with the latter far outweigh those of the former.
Ray and Kathy bring incredible experience, energy and excitement to their new roles. They join the rest of the CE&RD team consisting of Jay Thomas (Vice President, CE&RD), Nadine Glass (Department Coordinator), Bob Connelly, Kirsten Willis and Monika Sundbaum (Sr. Account Executives) and Sean Armentrout (Director, Combined Federal Campaign).
Our team looks forward to helping each of you have your best campaign ever!

Electrifying Thought
"Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours. No one needs a smile so much as the one who has no more to give."
