Governor Celebrates Youth Service Honorees |
|
Governor Christine Gregoire honored United Way of Pierce County's Varsity Letter in Community Service recipients at a reception May 19th at the Puyallup Fair Pavilion. The event celebrated 222 local youth who have given 145 hours or more of community service and earned a varsity letter just like those given to athletes and musicians.
The Governor, who was the evening's keynote speaker, discussed the importance of youth volunteerism and supporting the community. This year's letter winners come from 31 local high schools, representing every public school district in Pierce County as well as several private schools. Students tallied 54,785 verified hours of service between April 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009 and the group averaged 245 hours per student, well above the minumum requirement. FULL STORY

Governor's Budget Decisions Affect Local Services |
|
The 2009 Legislative session was focused on recovering some of the state's $9 million deficit. Cuts to several areas were made and Governor Christine Gregoire signed the final budget May 19th. Despite cuts, the affects to United Way of Pierce County's Advocacy Agenda were minimal.
United Way of Pierce County 2-1-1 is a vital resource to the community and has seen call volumes increase over the last several months. Despite the increased need for the service, budget restraints were forcing a $1 million cut to the system's two-year budget. While the state's general fund allocation for 2-1-1 was reduced by $1 million, Rep. Mark Ericks helped secure funding, and House, Senate and Governor budget approval, of $1 million from the Washington Assistive Technology Act Program (WATAP) to bring the total 2-1-1 investment of $2 million into the biennium budget.
