2008-09 Spirit of Pierce County Winner Brown & Brown Insurance accept their award from 2008 Campaign Chair, Tim Farrell

Brown & Brown Crowned Spirit of Pierce County Winner
Brown & Brown Insurance recieved United Way of Pierce County's highest honor, the Spirit of Pierce County Award, for their demonstration of the highest standards of civic engagement and community-based philanthropy.
 
As an organization, Brown & Brown encourages its staff of 50 to give their time, their talent and their treasure to support the community. Their small staff sits on 27 nonprofit boards or committees, donates to over 50 different charities and participates in several fundraising and volunteer events throughout the year. Brown & Brown employees are veteran participants of the Days of Caring and run a solid workplace campaign. 
 
Brown & Brown Insurance employees GIVE generously to many causes, they ADVOCATE as agency board members and they VOLUNTEER to make a difference. Brown & Brown LIVE UNITED by putting we before me. That's why they are the 2008 Spirit of Pierce County award winners.

Welcome New Board Members, Executive Slate

2009 Board Chair, Waylin McCurley of Rainier Pacific BankUnited Way of Pierce County announced its new board officers and new board members at its board meeting, Friday, May 1 at the Columbia Bank Building.
 
The 2009 board of directors officers include: Board Chair - Waylin McCurley, Rainier Pacific Bank; Chair-Elect - Madlyn Murrey, Mary Bridge Children's Hospital; Secretary - Mike Turek, The Boeing Company; and Treasurer - Jo Anne Coy, Columbia Bank.
 
New board members include:  Dr. Anthony Chen, Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department; Chris Gleason, Tacoma Public Utilities; Ron Lewis, Good Samaritan Hospital; Mike McCrabb, Johnson, Stone & Pagano; Jennifer Nino, Commencement Bank; Kathryn Schwarz, Rusty George Creative; Jeffery Vernor, Russell Investments; Dr. Artee Young, The Evergreen State College; and Tom Spilman, KeyBank, 2009 Campaign Chair

Top Community Volunteers, Organizations Honored

United Way of Pierce County honored key volunteers and organizations who embody the spirit of LIVE UNITED at the annual Community Celebration April 21.  
 
Mike Tucci, Sr., Phil Hayes, Jim Krueger and Tiffany Coleman were named Community Volunteers of the Year for their involvement in the early learning efforts, the community and Youth United respectively.
 
Other companies and individuals were honored based on outstanding campaign results, high degree of voluntary employee participation and strong community involvement.  Find out about all our nominees and winners.
 
United Way also introduced 2009 Campaign Chair, Tom Spilman of KeyBank and 2009 Board Chair, Waylin McCurley of Rainier Pacific Bank.




The Possible Solutions perform LIVE UNITED at this year's Community Celebration.

Possible Solutions Perform Original Song LIVE UNITED
United Way of Pierce County's Community Celebration was capped off with a live performance of the song LIVE UNITED by the Possible Solutions.  UWPC Board Member and Port of Tacoma Communications Director Rod Koon wrote the original song and leads the band, the Possible Solutions.  Also featured in the band are Rod's daughter, Jessie and United Way staff members Bob Connelly, Pete Grignon, Dan McFarland and Jay Thomas.

Kids Marathon Offers Fun and Promotes Health
More than 100 kids participated in the second annual Tacoma City Kids Marathon.  The event, held May 3, encouraged kids to get active and be healthy.
 
During their training, runners completed 25 "miles" of activities and good deeds before completing the 1.2 mile run through downtown Tacoma.
 
The group of runners included a team comprised of kindergartners
from Oakwood Elementary in Lakewood.   The team, the Bantam Phantoms, was trained by a Curtis High School senior and their teacher ran right alongside.
